Mille Lacs is known for it's walleye and northern pike and muskies....but few people talk about the excellent smallmouth bass population. A local television show filmed an angler taking a smallmouth bass from Mille Lacs that was quite near the state record.

The best time of year to fish these smallmouth bass is early-July through early September. As with walleye fishing the best smallmouth bass fishing times are in the morning and evening at Mille Lacs. And, as with walleye fishing, you will want to be on the windswept portion of the lake.

Start with crankbaits and if the cranks don't produce any smallmouth bass on Mille Lacs, switch to a jig.

Either way-it's another species to target when fishing Mille Lacs. Look for those smallies!
