Hello...

What do you all consider to be the best value in terms of all-inclusive guided fishing resorts? Looking to hit Lake of the Woods but there are so many outfitters. Would be willing to try another lake or even venture into Canada if need be. Any advice? Please email to falconfootball@hotmail.com.

Thanks.

Rob

Well folks, Warroad is on fire again. Was just up there this week end and we were fishing off the jeddy at the beach. We pounded the pike. 25-42 inchers. The run will not last long as usual but it is just getting started and better each day.

Biggest pike landed when I was there was a 42 1/2 incher. It was a real beauty.

sucker minnows and frozen ciscos. Good luck.

i grew up visiting lake of the woods with my grandparents, the HAGERT's (they had a mobile home by the KOA)/ grandpas boat had UFF-DA on the back of it! i loved it so much, eatting wallie every night. now, people in CA have no idea what wallie is and how good it tastes! yes, the fishing is awsome here in northern CA, however nothing is like wallie. i just want all of you out there that get to fish at lake of the woods, please enjoy it beacuse of the beauty and fun, and the wallie!

JEFF THE BEST TIME FOR THE BIG PIKE IS FR0M THE 15 0F MARCH UNTIL THE ICE GETS UNSAFE TO WALK OUT ON. THE LOCATIONS ARE ALONG THE SOUTH SHORE FROM BUFFALO TO THE SWIFT DITCH AREA. TRY 12' EARLY IN THE SEASON AND PROGRESS SHALLOWER AS THE SPRING WARMS UP. THE END OF MARCH THE KEY DEPTHS IS 5 - 7 FEET OR SHALLOWER. USE QUICK STRIKE RIGS AND PET OUT OUT SOME BIG LIVE SUCKERS WITH THE TAILS CUT OFF AND LARGE SMELT. THE DEEPER YOU GO FISH SET YOUR BAIT CLOSER TO THE BOTTOM. LATE IN THE SEASON PLACE YOUR BAIT FROM 6" below the ice and 6" FR0M THE BOTTOM. THE PIKE GO BITE IN SPURTS. DONT'T BE ALARMED IF YOU FISH FOR TWO HOURS AND DON'T GET A BITE BECAUSE IN THE NEXT TWENTY MINUTES YOU MY GET 6 FLAGS WHEN THE ICE STARTS TO RETREAT FROM THE WARROAD RIVER AROUND THE 20 TH OF APRIL USE YOUR FISHING POLE AND FISH FROM SHORE AT THE CITY PARK DOCK. THE BIG FEMALES ARE COMING OFF SPAWN AND WILL TAKE DEAD SMELT OR LIVE SUCKERS SUSPENDED OFF A LARGE BOBBER ALSO YOU CAN TAKE A BOAT AND FISH ZIPPEL BAY ANF 4 MILE BAY NEAR ADRIANS. AS FAR AS BASS I HAVENT FISHED THEM. GOOD LUCK...

WE FISHED PIKE TOWARDS THE SOUTH TIP BUFFALO ON SAT. 3 GUYS 9 FLAGS 1 34" AND 1 41" I TOOK PICTURES AND RELEASED BOTH. WE WANTED TO FISH SHALLOWER BUT PRESSURE RIDGE ALONG ELM PT KEPT US FROM GETTING ANY SHALLOWER THAN 12' I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TAKING A TRUCK ACROSS SPRINGSTEELES BREAKER. SATURDAY NIGHT ON THE WAY IN WE HAD TO GO AROUND A TRUCK THAT WAS STUCK IN THE RIDGE. THERE WHERE ABOUT 12 TRUCKS WAITING TO CROSS AND IT WAS VERY ROUGH AND HARD ON THE TRUCK. SUNDAY WE OPTED TO JUST FISH OUT IN FRONT OF SPRINGSTEELE 7' WATER 1 FLAG 34" ICE IS STILL 40" BUT IS GETTING SOFTER. IT WILL BE NO DOUBT ATVS FROM HERE ON OUT.

went to warroad and springsteel on sunday. warroad is a bit sloppy, but slush holes no more than 2 ft deep, trucks and trailers were navigating the heave. once past the heave, just a thin layer of surface slush. got rained on for about an hour yesterday too, that didn't help. could see the warm breezes shimmering over the ice across the lake, like pavement in the summer heat, pretty wild. still about 4 feet of ice, but the quality of the ice has degraded. ice shavings coming from auger were really wet all the way through, and HEAVY, will definitely buy a 3 hp next year, the 2 hp was overworked! springsteel was very very sloppy right off the landing, but not bad once out there, lots of people off the river in warroad, very few at springsteel. everyone i talked to had limited success. i brought my 7 year old, and his cousin,8. they had fun, but we only had 1 flag, a 35 inch pike, and 3 small walleyes, but not very often you can sit on the ice in a t-shirt and get a sunburn!! hate to say it but time is running out for this ice season quickly. good luck all!

Fished 16 Mile on Sat with NorthStar and Trav and company. It is getting sloppy and crossing some breaks is getting rough. NorthStar and myself picked up a few nice perch, few smaller walleyes and saugers. A group north of us did really well after a day and a half of fishing.NorthStar and I left Trav and company to head to URL, checking with Trav they had a few and were waiting for the walleye bite.

Burns Pool,

We had our best luck at the end of Adrians road. You will need to continue driving for about 10-12 miles past the island you crossed. You will be in approximately 34 ft. This worked well for us last week on bigger walleye/sauger and perch. Hope this helps.

We went to LOW and went fishing. We didn't get crap. We caught a total of like 25, and only 2 were keepers. And they were small at that. We went over the island if you come off of Adrian's and then another 3-4 miles on top of that. It was SO foggy on Sunday. Where on the Minnesota side is a good spot for fishing. I seem to have no luck. I swear when the fish hear my name they scram. Thanks!

Just got back from Oak Island ,fishing with my buds Fri.And Sat. March 15,16. Did real good Walley, sauger and a dozen or so perch. Did'nt limit out but if we had one more day we would have. Stayed at Angle in lodge and had an excellent time. They really take care of you. There guides will put you on fish. Jig color of choice for the locals is gold, but I think we got half of our fish on chart./white glow jigs. Same colors for jigging raps. Joe Liberty

My first choice is a gold and chartreuse swedish pimple. My second is the buck shot rattle spoon. I prefer using just the heads on the end of the spoons and a shiner on my dead stick. Fished march 7/8/9. Went out of Border view Lodge. Weather was cold -27 sat. -13 sunday thats the temp not the wind chill. Anyhow went 14 miles out and fished in 36 ft of water. Primarily fishing 3 - 5 ft off the bottom. We caught about 20 fish a day keeping about 10 putting back the rest. The zippy lure and the helicopter jig yielded the biggest fish which topped out at 22 inches. Minnows whole of just the heads seemed to work well. Jigging out produced the dead sticks.

Fished out of Zippel bay resort on 3-7,8,9 and stayed in a sleeper in 27 feet of water. Caught 130 to 150 walleye/sauger, 3 northers, and one perch. Kept 13 walleye/sauger. The biggest walleye was a fat 25" (6.5 lbs.) and the biggest northern was 36" (11.5 lbs). Marked alot more fish, but didn't seem like they were really all that active. We did not see any suspended fish like many of the reports have talked about. The bigger fish came in streaks. About half of the keepers hit watermelon colered "varmit" jigging spoons. Shiners outfished fatheads 3 to 1. The extreme cold weather (-25 below)and the high wind kept us from moving around much. I think that the warmer weather will really help the fishing this coming weekend. The ice was 50" thick.

Went fishing 3-8 out at buffulo point in 30 feet of water did ok. One limit of walleyes and sauger. Lost some nice fish to snapped line probable northerns. Get a hold of those nuclear jigs. You can get them at the Cenex in Roseau and at Denny's in Roseau. Orange or purple seems to be the best colors.

Can anyone tell me what the limit is for walleye and sauger on LOW? I heard they allow more than 6 walleye and sauger combined. So is there a later season like on the Rainy River? Last, when does the ice come off. Thanks Much.

Just came back yesterday 3/02. Auger has about 6" to spare (with extension). Sunday was VERY cold, 31 bellow (actual temp.), fishing showed it, no good. Stayed at Long Point, fished in front of resort Friday and 16 mile on Sat. Should have had the days flip/flopped, oh well!

Joyce and the boys at Long Point treated very well, no problem here!

I've been fishing pike just out from warroad for about 6 winters now. The fishing is usually sporadic, but some days are phenomenal! Does anyone know of any structure, or the so called channels I've heard people talk about? I've had instances where we're not catching much, but the people 50 yards aways are hammering them.... ?

Fishing out of Long Point and North of Twin Islands 2/25 & 26. Fishing slow and small. Some of the resort houses had good catches (checking the fish cleaning houses). Shiners could be found in the Baudette area (Log Cabin Bait store)and some of the resorts. Good Luck

I am wondering if shiners improve yor catch rate? Do any of the local bait shops have any? Who are some of the top guides for LOW. I am a fellow guide in the cities and know how much a guide can improve your fishing. I want to hire a guide and learn more about the big lake. Where is the best area to go out of right now? Walleyes is what we are looking for. Any advice would be great. Thanks

How important are shiners for your catch rate? Do any of the local bait shops have any? If you were to pick an area to start from where would it be? I would like to get a guide any suggestions. I am a fellow guide myself in the cities and would like to gain some insight about the big LOW fishery. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Spent Sunday and Monday on LOW. Fishing was much slower. Fished in 32-34 feet, 12 miles out from Pine Island. Adrians Resort road. Caught only 20-30 eyes and sauger. Size was disappointing most were under 15 inches. Able to keep only five. -26 below on Monday am. Lots of ice you will need an extention. good luck.
