hi, i moved up here from iowa 5 years ago thinking this would be really good fishing for my kids and me. thus far, i absolutely hate it because i can not find anyone that will give me any information on a good spot to take kids. i want a nice semi-close spot...(within an hour's drive) that i can shore fish from. i gave up hope around here for the past few years but am goign to resurrect my desire to find a good fishing spot. i miss the nice county parks in iowa that had small lakes where one could walk all the way around the lake to shore fish. i need more space than just a tiny spot where the boat dock is. does anyone have any suggestions? id fish for about any type of species since i catch and release anyway. also, i really miss trout fishing in iowa. i dont have the time to travel down to southern minnesota for that. is there any spot up this way for trout fishing? thank you for any ideas !! ps, i do have a fishing boat, so that isnt entirely out of the question, but would prefer shore fishing.

I am wondering if anyone has fished Sand Lake (south of Dunvilla) and if you know the quality of fishing now in the lake. I'm considering looking at a lake lot there.

Thx!

I would have to say btwn 12 and 14' of water, and fish about 2-3' off the bottom. You will see the crowd out there.

I spoke with the area game warden, nice guy, about Nottage Lake. He said that in talking with the RR police, they gave him a letter that says CP RR won't allow trespassing and that in the next couple of day they are going to post the RR R.O.W. Back to the 'chopper idea.

I forgot to add - if you do access nottage by the tracks it is soo line policy that you stay a minimum of 4 ft from the rails. The rails can not be crossed accept at the township road. There is enough room to access the lake from the toe of the slope, some brush would have to be removed but a great trail would be accessable right to the waters edge and clear of the tracks. At this point the property line is not 100% clear so if you are not sure homeowner will surely push tespassing if a foot is stepped on his property.

I forgot to include - if you do access through the tracks it is soo line policy that you stay a minimun of 4 ft. from the rails and can only be crossed at the township road. Its tight and some brush needs to be cleared, but a very nice trail (walk, snowmobile, 4-wheeler) could be at the toe of the slope for the tracks.

You are all HOT on Nottage. GREAT - The crappies are incredible, I've been out three times. Red Lake action in Detroit Lakes. But, the land owner, who believes he owns the lake. He doesn't, you are all aware of the railroad r/w that abuts the lake. I see a civil tech and a land surveryor has been on here, and I am also a civil tech in detroit lakes. I have spent A LOT of time researching and collecting info on this lake. I have the plan and profile sheets from soo line rr showing the r/w, I collected all available information from Becker Courthouse, Contacted the county rls for his records, I also went to the county engineers office and collected some plan sheets showing rr r/w. The rr right of way goes into the lake aprox. 25-30 ft for a streth of about 50ft. This homeowner no longer controls access to this lake for this reason. Soo line RR can let whoever they want on the lake through their land. Permision has to be obtained from soo line though. I has this at one time but the homeowner made such problems they said it might be best to not have the problems. So now the homeowner is back to controling the lake. I would love to get some people together and work on this. I seen the mention of a hellicopter- I checked on that and the closest place is out of fargo and very spendy. I think a plane with ski's could land though. Anyone wanting any info please email me and I will gladly make you copies of all the info I have and hopefully we can all enjoy this lake.

Ken

I'm new to looking at these reports (just spotted this web site), and I'm interested in fishing crappies. Nottage L. sounds interesting! Where is this lake? I'm looking for a little ice fishing and am interested in spring crappies/sunfish as well (when our ice turns to liquid again)! Can you help me out? I do most of my fishing from a canoe - done a lot of that in the BWCA.

Jim,

I can't agree with you more. I'm a Civil Engr Tech, for a County, but not Becker. I need to go to the Becker Court house or to the Becker Engr and see what I can pull up. I also have been working with the CP RR on a project, I'm going to talk to someone that will lead me in the right direction.

I don't really want to fight with these people, I just want to prove them wrong.

feel free to email me, maybe we could work together.

Jon, after growing up as a farm kid, I generally take the side of landowners in these type of matters. However it really ticks me off when landowners act like the world owes them something. I am a land surveyor, and if you are unsuccessful in locating R/W plats, I would be happy to check my resources for any pertinent info. I was just going to go out to Nottage two nights ago, would have been interesting....Good luck
