When i went up to cass lake to stay with a friend we went out all day!!!! We caught so many we had to give some away. That is the biggest amount of fish I've ever caught in my life!!! I caught huge perch and about 4 walleyes a day!!! I hope i can go up soon and stay more!!!! All i used for bait was leeches and minnows, sometimes nightcrawlers. That is about all i caught!!!! I am 13 years old. Hello to Danny and Bear! Hope to see u people soon!

Scott,

Opening day is the 10th of May. Great to hear you had success trying a nontraditional method of fishing. We do a lot of casting earlier in the year when the fish are easier to locate but generally you need to troll later in order to find them. To some extent I would say it was a fluke, but if it was one of the smaller humps on Cass then I would say it was a good plan, do it again and good luck!

I was wondering when opening day is for walleye on Cass? Also, while fishing on Cass one night last June I decided to just sit on an open hump out in the middle of the lake and cast with a shad rap, rather than troll.IT WORKED!Was it just a fluke or is that a common way to go about it?I wouldn't have been so surprised if I were using a jig and minnow or some other bottom bouncing bait.Any info would be appreciated.... Good Fishing

Hey Mike...The Mayfly hatch in the Cass Lake area usually occurs around the last ten days of June. It tends to last the better part of 2 weeks. Its gonna happen between June 20th. and the 4th of July.

What is the average date when the Mayflies hatch on Cass?

Any time before the mayflies start hatching is the best early in the year period. Once this begins it can get a little tough for a few days after each wave of flies. Over all though you really can't complain, Cass has so many walleye in it there is always a bite. Hope this helps you out.

I have been fishing cass for the last 3 yrs.I hve been up on the 3 week of May,the last week of May,the 1 week of June and this yr I will be there the 2 week of June.I noticed a lot of posts on this site asking for tips on how to catch walleye on cass.I have been trolling a 3-5 inch original rapala on the flats of both Cass and Andrusia and had great luck. But it seems to be MUCH better at night. The locals sit in front of the bridge that crosses the outlet from andrusia to cass right at dark and do well too. They appear to be jigging. But I wait until they are done and then troll the flats on andrusia. For anyone who lives in Minn.I just want to say how much I have enjoyed fishing in your state.I have met some very nice people and the locals are (much to my surprise) quite willing to give a fishing tip here and there!

Muskies tough early on on cass, doesn't really pay to start working cass till mid july-august. Work deeper diving cranks, believers and depth raider work well on deep breaks and rock piles, get used to fishing blind, depend on electronics to find sparsh cabbage. Watch the wind.

Bret- In late August, the best place on the chain to fish Perch is right at the mouth of Kitche, where the channel from the pug hole (aka pike hole) leads into Kitche. If you fish the reeds on both sides of the mouth, you will catch a nice mess of perch, and sometimes bluegills. Good Luck, Ace

Bret- One of the best spots that I've found on the chain for fishing perch and even bluegills in August is in Kitche, right at the mouth of the channel that leads to the pug hole. Fish the reeds on both sides, and you will catch a nice mess of perch. Ace

I sure like fishing for muskies on Cass. Miles of shoreline reeds. Cabbage beds. Rock piles. Sand flats. Steep breaklines winding everywhere. I am haunted by these waters. Soon I will return.

I am fourteen and have been coming up to Cass Lake (Star Island) all of my life. My family house a cottage on the North Shore. The fishing this year was avereage. We got uor best luck actually in Lake Windigo. We used plugs out in the middle of the lake. But if you just want to stay on Cass there is good walley off of O'niels point.

I have fished cass several years in the past. I caught walleyes on the center sand bar in the big part of the lake, also on the south side of potato island, also on the north point of star island. We also caught crappies in the lilly pads@ 8;00 by the brown house in the corner in buck lake. Good luck

Hi, I will be up fishing Cass Lake and Pike Bay with my 81 year old father August 31 to September 7. Due to his age and health, this may be his last fishing trip of his life after many through his years. I would love to make this trip his best. Please share any information as to where, how and what natural or artificial bait to use to help catch the "big one" of his life. He and I will be truly greatful. THANK YOU - Carl
