Hello from the Whitefish Chain. The bite has started right now for Crappies and Sunfish. As water temp gets warmer more fish move into the channels and shallow dark water bays all over. Fish bitting on small glow jigs or plain hook and crappie minnow. Moonlight bay, Channel behind The Bait Box on Cross Lake good places to start. Also, way up on the north end of Upper Whitefish on Arrowhead and Kilworry ricebeds.Old Muskrat and Beaver houses good places to try. All small bays on Chain worth checking out.Just remember to stay shallow. Get out and have some fun. Most lakes in area will start putting out fish. Good Luck!

Just wanted people to know that Walleye milking process has began on the Pine river where it enters Upper Whitefish lake. Get up there if you get the chance. Its neat to see the quality of fish the Chain has to offer. They begin milking around 8:30 to 9:00 AM daily. Today was first day that they collected eggs. It is actually beter to go later in day to see fish in the holding nets as you can see into the water better with the sun higher in the sky. Bring polarized glasses to get better look at them. Please let the DNR do their job, try not to interfear with their work as stocking helps many of the lakes around the state. This process should last a week to ten days. Enjoy

Hello again from the Whitefish Chain. Just check out the weather and you can tell spring is finally here. Was out fishing last night. Caught some very nice sunfish, some up to 9", using Genz glow jigs and waxies. Fish are right below ice and it is great fun watching them bite. We saw several northerns and bass also. Crappies did not show up for us but we still had fun. Going again tonight for last time as I don`t think ice will hold up any longer. Still crappies being caught on Upper Mission lake and Horseshoe but be very carefull. We are draging jon boat with us. The place to be is up on Rainy river as the bite for Walleye is GREAT to say the least. Birchdale is open to all size boats and Frontier is open if you have 4x4. Vidas should be open for weekend. Get there early as everyone heading that way. Pick up minnows on way as bait shops having hard time keeping up. Rainbows and shinners best bet for bait and current not really fast so jigs in the 3/8ths size working well. The weather should be nice. Thats where I`m heading, mabye see you on the water. Good Luck, Dave Shogren

Hello from Shogren Guide Service. Ice conditions are getting worse by the day, but bite continues to be good. Was out over weekend and did very well. Nice fish coming from Upper Mission lake in 5 to 7 feet of water. Fish are right below ice, fun to watch bite. Using wax worm on Genz Glow Jigs worked great. Also good fishing on many lakes in area such as Bass, Horseshoe, North Long, Loon, and Bertha Lakes. Walking traffic only and that might not last long. Get the open water equipment ready as will be back to open water fishing soon. Time to get boat ready. Good Luck!

Hello again from the Whitefish Chain. First off and foremost, Please use caution heading out on area lakes, the last two weeks have had a major effect on the ice. I would not recomend any veichle traffic except the use of ATV`s , I`ve been walking. Fish bite is ON with many reports of fish being caught on many lakes around. On the Chain, Loon, Bertha, and Clamshell all putting out some panfish. Work shallow water as fish have moved in, use baits like Genz glow jigs with minnows, waxies, or larvi just under ice as they seem to be there.Drill lots of holes, than let sit for a bit before fishing, cover ground. No need for locator as most fish can be watched thru hole. Other lakes in area are also producing action, try Lower Mission, Bass, Horseshoe,Goodrich, and Greer. Stay shallow 5 to 10 feet of water for best luck.Keep close to weeds. Again, please be cautious on the ice as will change every day with the warm weather. Check out my website for local forecast. We seen many Geese and Ducks while fishing yesterday and also Eagles all ready sitting on nests.Good Luck and please remember to release the big ones.

Fishing on the Chain still about the same as some Lakers still being caught on Big Trout Lake. Shiners are still the best bait being used, either on tip-up or by jigging from depths of 45-85 feet of water. The panfish bite has been ok but with the cold front here it is bound to be a little slower. There has been action on a quite a few smaller lakes in the area. Greer lake to east of Crosslake still putting out both Crappies and Sunfish. Other lakes in the area having some action are Bertha, Lower Hay,Horseshoe,Mission, and North Long. Time for new licenses and trout stamps and hopefully some warmer weather to turn the bite back on.Good Luck on the ice and think spring.

It is still a good time here on the Whitefish Chain as the Lake Trout bite continues on Big Trout Lake. Fish are responding to shiner minnows by jigging or tip-ups in 45-85 feet of water. Bring your locator as most fish are suspended a ways off bottom. Fish still seem to be most active early in the morning and than again in the evening hours. There have been some fish caught in the teens and some reports of even bigger fish being lost. You can still easily drive on from the access on the east end of lake, but most action happening from middle of the lake to the west. Crappie action seem to be fair on Loon, Bertha, and Dagett lakes. Most action seems to be after dark in anywhere from the 20-30 foot range with fish suspending off the bottom 3-5 feet. Use crappie minnows and glow jigs for best results. Also some good sunfish action happening on Greer lake just east of Crosslake about seven miles. Move around a lot and fish the weed beds from the 7-15 foot range. It is still a good time to get up here in the lakes area as there are a lot of lakes to fish and the pressure is not as bad as in some areas of the state, so get out there and Good Luck.

Crosslake is located about 23 miles north of Brainerd and the area sports some of the best fishing in Mn and their are many smaller lakes in the area with some smaller rivers (streams)

Walleye fishing on Chain is starting to taper off. There is still some fish being caught on the humps out from Big Island. Try fishing the breaks with rainbows or shiners from 21 to 30 feet. Some fish are getting caught in shallow water at night, some in less than 10 feet. Crappies are still biting on Loon at night in 20 to 25 feet of water suspending off the bottom about 2 to 4 feet. Use glow jigs and watch your locator. Lake Trout and Walleye and huge Northern are being caught on Big Trout Lake. Fish center lake area and humps on west end of lake from 45 to 80 feet of water and be patient. Shiners seem to work best here. Only today and tommorow left so get out and give it a try. Good Luck!
