I was on the Rainy this Friday trying for sturgeon. Most of the guys were telling me the bite was slow. We landed 6 and missed a couple more. I was fishing in about 25 feet of water with a 3/0 hook and three night crawlers. All the fish we caught were really small the largest was 38". Any one know what I was doing wrong or where the larger fish can be caught? I also landed a 11 1/2lb red horse sucker along with about 20 smaller ones. All included it was a fun trip but the fish were not the size I was looking for.

Greetings all.

I am thinking of heading up to the Rainy River on Monday to try out the Sturgeon fishing. Any updates on the bite? How about the crowds on a Monday? Where is a good place to land near Baudett or east?

I got room in the boat.

JAKE; Sorry you are too late for this year. The walleye season on LOW and Rainy River closes today, April 14. It closes on April 14 every year, but double check the regs next year in case something changes. When the river opens up and you can float a boat in late March or early April, hundreds of people come to try for the thousands of walleyes that run up the river. Usually the warmer the better, so the last days of the season tend to be the best. I've never fished it from shore in the spring, so can't give any pointers there. The ice goes out farther east first, so Birchdale and Frontier open up before Baudette and Wheelers Point. Expect long lines at the boat ramps, there aren't many places to park and usually lots of people. Once you get on the water, be careful of the current, rocks and ice floes. The main method is to anchor and bounce jig/minnow on the bottom. You will have to have a big enough jig to get down through the current. Try different depths and areas until you find fish. When you find them, hold on, because most will be too big to keep(you can't keep walleyes over 19" this time of year) and you have a chance of catching good size sturgeons too. Couble check the regs for the closing date and limits--there are size and creel restrictions. Most people stay in baudette area. good luck next year!

I just heard about the great fishing on the Rainy river from a freind of mine and it almost seems too good of fishing to be true. I also seen many fish caught on a television program i was watching. Ive never been up there before and was just wondering if anyone would be willing to share a little info about where to even start up there..(there are many miles of shore there and i just want to go enjoy some good walleye fishing before i leave for the Navy on May 6. walleye opener is just a few days before i leave here down here) any info or just general hints on how to catch a few nice fish before i go would be greatly appreciated. good luck fishing and save a few for me. jake

I caught and released 63 walleyes from shore on wednesday. Started at sunrise and fished until sundown. Caught all my fish in 8-14 feet of water. Best fishing is always in the shallows away from all the boats.

Just came back today we launched at frontier the access was kinda torn up a little really muddy. Birchdale is better. We went towards baudette the closer towards baudette we got the better the fishing. Vidas or what ever the access was called has some shore Ice I seen today. Caught a monster sturgeon in front of that access. Walleye fishing is great I think anyone going Friday or sat will hit it perfect. Current is slow fish tend to be anywhere you can find 20 feet plus of water. We used gold 3/8 once jig heads and shiners and did very well. Caught fish from 5 inches to 27"'s well and a 45" sturgeon as well. If you wanna use rainbows buy them before you get to the river everyone's sold out. Got to access at 8.00 am weds morning and parked 1/2 mile away so show up early also. Lots of DNR on river this year good luck fishing

Going up to the Canadian side this weekend and thought we try fishing the river for the first time, does anyone have any info on the launches or where to go? We will be West of Emo where 71 intersects 11, probably 10 - 15 miles East of Birchdale. Don't know if we should go up river or down river. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The bugs aren't out yet. With the temp still dropping below freezing at night prevents the !@#$ mosquitoes from hatching.

Was wondering what is the best time/month for musky, northerns of the large size (catch & release). And what is the worst time for the bugs, in that neck of the area.

Thanks for the input.

Correction ... The ice is completely OUT at the Birchdale landing and all landings East into I'Falls, Frontier landing should be open with no shore ice by late this week (3.31.03-4.6.03)...

Fishing hasn't been the best. If you fish close to where the ice is breaking up people have had more luck. The ice is completely at the Birchdale landing and all landings East into I'Falls, Frontier landing should be open with no shore ice by late this week (3.31.03-4.6.03). The ice has been going out rather fast with all of the warm days. The ice has been clearing at about 3-4 miles a day. As long as there are no more cold snaps or snow, the break up should move along at the same speed.

The couple of times I've been there, I've stayed and delt with Clementson's Resort. They have honest fishing reports, and have decent housing facilities.

I would highly recommend checking them out.

From a reader:

She's still froze pretty tight in our area. Last night there were still folks ice fishing at Birchdale, although some open water is just around the corner from that location. I fish the Rainy near Baudette, and there still more than 20 inches of ice where I fish, although there are areas where the ice is much thinner.

One of the local resorts along the Rainy has a website, and they do a good job of updating anglers on the present conditions of the river. Just check out www.clementsonresort.com and click on fishing reports and river conditions.
