The trend is toward longer rods for Northern Pike for these reasons:

• You can cast further and more accurate
• You have better control when you retrieve and steer your bait through weeds and other snags
• You can go deeper when you do a "figure-8"
• The power is better on hook sets. The longer rod takes slack up faster
• The longer fishing rod helps to lead the Northern Pike and adds better shock absorbing power.
