Ice Fishing Reports for Minnesota Fishing-Archive
Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeI feel that having the possability to catch 13 and 14 inch crappies is well worth the trip. This is a onece and a life time experiance. You could get skunked but if you search for them and are moble you should be able to catch themm . I will be letting all the fish I catch go. So there will be a few extra for other fishermen. Name: fishhungry Upper_Red_LakeHey cookie you seem to be the one to talk to about upper red.We live 300 miles away was wondering if you could steer us in the right direction. Are they biting good enough to make the drive? Name: justwannacatchfish Upper_Red_LakeCookie, I think you would be nutz if you move you house, just reading you fishing reports sounds like you have been doing really well. It just sounds like it is a hit and miss type of thing. I was just on another website and there was a guy on there that went out of Hudacs last night and fished from 4:30 to 7:00 and cought his 15 slabs. It sounds like the fish are starting to move back frome the west, and in time every spot will be a hot spot. And yours will just get hotter. Do you get a chance to fish the morning much, just out of curiosity i was just wondering if the morning was a better bite or the evening. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeLast night was a slow bite, we fished from 5pm to 11pm and landed 12 croppies.I let a 11 inch crappie go and you would think I let a state record go the way my brother acted. I tkink I will let all crappies I catch go the rest of the time he is here. The wife landed a 11 # northern on here new zebco ultra lite.We were able to take pictures ,she played it for at least 5 min. what a blast. Will find out how some of the other fishermen did and let all know COOKIE PS. do I move my house today? Name: Putsky Mille_LacsWinky, At first I thought the same thing, however I talked once again with a group of friends that fished Hennepin last night and they caught six walleyes. Out of the six walleyes four were caught between 2:30-4:00 am. The last I checked there was not a full moon last night. The four were caught on rattle reels and shiners. Good luck to all Name: SlipBob Red_RiverI have never ice fished the red before and i was just wondering the best way to set up your lines and what to use for bait. Help would be highly appreciated. We will be going out of McQuoids in which I will hopefully be able to come back with some good news and Ideas. Our group however is not planning on being very mobile this time, in which I think may hurt our numbers. We will however be having an enormous amount of fun. I will let you know how we did and were they had us placed on the lake. Good luck to all Name: wildwing Upper_Red_LakeHope to travel north to url this weekend sometime, have some friends that are taking up some sleepers for Sat. night. Thanks mkerkaert2002@yahoo.com Name: John Blong Brainerd_AreaWeekly Report 1-23-03 The temperatures in the Brainerd Lakes Area were cold this last week. Not even the notorious Black Hole on 371 Bay of North Long lake could keep from freezing over. The temperature reached -15 degrees at my house on Wednesday night. This week's cold weather also seemed to put a damper on the fishing as well. The crappie bite was slower than last week. The problem wasn't in finding the crappies. It was in trying to get them to bite once you did. There's nothing more frustrating then seeing a nice fish on your electronics, have it swim up to your bait, look at it, and then swim away. The best crappie bets are still Upper Gull, Gladstone, North Long, Gull, and Round lake. The bulk of the fish are still suspended near shore points, located close to deep water. You'll catch more crappies right now with smaller jigs and wax worms than the traditional jig and minnow combo. With the cold weather, the crappies just seem to get picky. This should improve once the weather starts to stabilize. The walleye action has also slowed in the Brainerd Lakes Area this last week. Gull, North Long, Pelican and Lake Edwards are still producing some fish, but the size hasn't been close to the caliber of previous weeks. Getting away from the crowds is still a key. Most of the fish taken this last week were caught in deeper water. With 32 to 45 feet of water being the most productive depth. The deep water Islands and saddle areas have been producing the most fish. A shiner minnow on a tip-up has been a tough combination to beat. The Jaycee's Ice tourney was a great time once again. I spent it with the Fier Boys. I'd like to say that we won the truck. But it didn't happen. Oh well, there's always next year. I hope that everyone out there had a great time. And if you missed it, I hope you plan on making the trip next year. Hats off to all those people that worked so hard to pull it off. It was a great contest!! P.S. I think I hear those big Red Lake crappies calling to me. I might just have to seek up there this next week. Take care until next week!
