Just fished it last weekend. Heard that you couldn't get on the main lake due to ice heaves. We fished in Walker Bay. Saw lots of fish (walleyes, perch, pikes) with the camera, but none would bite. Slow weekend.

Fished out of Mac's Twin Bay on the 5 mile gravel and the fishing was very slow. We only caught one Eel pout and a 26" Walleye. Caught eye on a plain red hook and shiner.Going up again this weekend and plan on moving the house either to Hennipen or out to mud flats.

Brian: Good to see that you had a good time. I am the guy that talked to you right after you begin fishing. I had the white Ford pickup and had my wife along. We loaded up our portable and left. As we were driving away I saw you pull out one of those slabs. We had a good time also, we missed many but we ended up catching 17 big slabs. I hope to get up there again within a week or so with my son.

Was up At LOW feb 1st weekend, We caught a couple hundred walleye and sauger just like the reports have been saying.BUT we could have fit most of them in our beer bottles. We had to keep moving constantly to find bigger fish, and had to use shiners. The bit was hot but fish were very disapointing in size.

Here is my 2 cents. Fishing sucked. Read all kinds of reports from multiple sites. Talked to multiple locals and bait shops. Talked to about 10 people on the ice in different spots and they all said the same thing. I saw one guy with a bucket full of 16-20 inch sauger and walleye at 16 mile in 32 feet and he said he hadn't caught them in his current spot, as the fish are thrashing in his bucket and his setting the hook again. Lying bastard. He was using spottail shiners and a littler lead head and jigging. Other than him I saw alot of people with minimal fish. Long way to drive to not catch more than a few cigars and one ugly eelpout. Ice was about 30 inches. Seamed to be in OK shape but was really bumpy even for a big truck. Made it threw without having to use an extention but barely. I would bring it though.

Cookie, Thank you so very much for putting me on the fish. I had the time of my life last weekend. I caught 10 crappies Thurday night starting at 8pm till 10pm. I had two lines going and that was a mistake. I missed more than I caught. Friday was good again but I only got 8. My buddies were content on fishing in the portable and were not mobile. I wouldn't recommend fishing right buy each other. They only caught a handful. LOW was slow, should have never left Red. Crappie minnows with a glow ratfinkie worked best and pink worked well for me. Got a few on waxies. Fishing was best starting at about 4pm though 8-10pm. Cookie please Email me with some information on your sleeper and cabin. I kept a crappie frozen and uncut to show my father and father in law. They didn't believe me when I called and told them. Now they want to come. Hopefully will be coming up in a couple weeks again with others. Good Luck.

Fished Upper Red for the first time. Went out of Hillman's early Friday(1-31-03) morning. Had to drive thru about 1 foot of water for 15 feet up an over a steep bridge to get across a large preasure ridge. What a ride that was! Fished 4 miles out for 13 hrs and caught 23 large crappie between 4 fisherman. Too bad you can't keep walleye's as around 20 were caught with the biggest measuring 23.5 inches. Most were 1 to 2 pound fish. Went out again at 6am Saturday morning in a snow squall and searched for the portables in the dark for about a 1/2 hour. Caught only 1 crappie for 3 hours of fishing. Packed up and went to Lake Of The Woods.

I be fishin' on Mille Lacs and I ain't catch nothing. Me and my beer drinkin' buddies were jiggin spoon baits near the Mud Bay, that would be the southern end. Then out of a blazin nowhere my flag went up and the line was peeling out like a sow at pig roast. I nearly swallowed my dip running after the flag. I grabbed hold that der dem line and pulled with all my might. Strenth of dat fish was unbelievable. Da line busted bout 20 long minutes in da fight. It was a sad momement but nothin old no.7 could handle. Ever since then I havent been back to that dem der lake.

I was thinking of coming up and mountain biking across the lake with some friends and doing some ice fishing on the fishing side. Could someone write me back and tell me how much accumulated snow is on the lake. Is the ice good all the way across? I remember last year that the snow was plowed out to the fish houses, but I don't remember what the snow depth was much beyond that? If someone who has done any biking on the lake reads this I'd appreciate a reply.....I've got carbide studded Nokian Mtn. bike tires and am going to be bikejoring with three Canadian Inuit Sled dogs if I have snow free ice.....thanks, marcus

Went fishing on Sat off Breezy Pt. with Ev "darn it got off" and Bruce "is the ice thick enough?". Catching fish was very slow, marked many fish but very few takers. Ev and Bruce each picked up one nice Crappie each while I am waiting until the fishing heats ups and a guy can catch more than one at a setting. Still a very nice day to be out on the ice, fry up some fish and sit back and enjoy the outdoors.

The wife and I just came off the lake we had a nice steak dinner. The fishing was extreamly slow we caught 5 crappies missed 3 or 4 . Fisherwomen a extention would be a good idea. We have been going 4 miles out of hillmens but the reports have picked up at all the resorts. Some friends went out about 41/2 miles and did well yesterday. Expect the morning bite to be good, we will see. COOKIE

First tome fishing the lake. We went out of Hillmans landing. Set up next to the first group of shacks to the right of the road. We were right next to a rental unit #58. Hooked into some nice northerns, 2 over 30" and one just under and always the fish story of the bigger one that got way, tangled himself up in another tip up and cut the line. Not a single Crappie, people around us only reported 4 total all day. We got on the lake about 9AM and left at 6:30.Wishing we would've went over to the bigger group of shacks and been a little more mobile when the fishing was slow in one area.Going off the lake after dark and with four hundred more portables on the ice everything looked different. Should've used the GPS I had in the bag.The road were plowed all day long and were a super highway when we headed off. Red glow spoons and jigs is what we heard were hot.

Wild Bill took off so no report from him, I would think he got his limit as he always does. Ron and Scott got 30 they fished 2 days ,evnings only.Rob's group left so have no idea how they ended up. Yesterday seemed to be more of an late afternoon and early evening bite, with folks saying that they didn't catch there first one until the 3 to 5 pm time frame, and some nice crappies were caught..talked to one group of three who had 41, group of two who had their limits. Then today the bitetime changed with a more productive bite starting at 7:30 this morning and going steady until 10:30 and folks picking up some here and there through the afternoon. (Spots that proved hot yesterday cooled down this afternoon) But a group of four had 48 that weighed in up to 1lb 13 oz.

The glow jig colors that were very productive this weekend were green glow and red glow, with good reports from orange glow this afternoon, and tipped with a minnow.

The access owners at Hudec's, Hillmans, Westwind, Rogers and Morts are all good about letting folks know where they have gotten good reports from and where they have found some(of course a hot spot yesterday may not be the hotspot today). Someone mentioned Kelly P., he's not an access owner but does rent ice houses...the folks in that area are Terrific, a very friendly and helpful bunch of people.

I would try suckers for northerns.Gloww jigs work well for crappies try different colors, crappie minnows work fine. The waxies work but they seem to like a couple on the hook. If your not catching fish after dark you need to move its always nice to have extra holes drilled in the area as they can be biting 10 feet from where there not biting. If you have a vexilar you can jump around and find fish feeding ,work them off the bottom if they are there you will mark them . COOKIE
