Time to move beyond Joel! Life is about having fun and enjoying yourself. Some people get it and others don't. I look at this site for information about crappies. I don't know Cookie or Joel. However, I do know what Crappies look like but it seems that I need help to catch them and that is why I look at this site. Please help me catch fish! Soap operas belong on TV not here. Life is too short to be bitter!!!

My questions: Has the N or S side of URL been more effective this year? How many groups of houses are on the south end?

No response from any URL resorts?

Are you serious? Don't they realize this website has more traffic and is the number one website in the search engines? Are they just blind? Talk about a wasted advertising opportunity!

Jeepers, this website is WELL KNOWN amongst my fishermen friends. We trust the guy who runs it. He's not in it for the money....he does it because he likes fishing. (He said so to us in a personal email)

So let's see:

1. #1 website

2. #1 in traffic

3. The most trusted website

4. The most talked about website among us weekend warriors...

Man...some resort owners just must be blind! This place is a potential goldmine for them.......

Thanks webmaster for providing an HONEST website!

Cookie, I think it is great how you keep everyone informed on the activity at URL. For that I thank you. I will be at URL the 14th, 15th & 16th with a couple buddies. If you have a fish house open or know of someone that does, even for part of the visit, please let me know. Thanks, obart150@aol.com

Does anyone know how the fishing on the southeast side of the lake is? We are going next weekend and are staying through Dickies. I have never fished the southeast side and am looking for some hot spots. Looking forward to another great time at the lake this year!! Thanks

I don't know what up with this guy bashing cookie. Even if the case would be that he is following houses so what he's catching fish and he is sharing his reports and tips unlike the other resorts. If you go out to any given spot with a cluster of houses what do you see:? Resort houses right in the mix of them chances are these were the first houses put out and chances are that Joel your house is problably right there to. I don't see cookie bragging that he is some almight scout, he is just letting people know how the fish are bitting so people like you and I that have a 4-5 hour drive have something to look forward to. And about the webmasters note, if you go to the <snipped> you will see that many resorts are on the red lake forum there. Why is that i don't know maybe becuase of the advertising they get.

I intetions are not to make any one made, but there is no need to point fingures and rip some body down because they enjoy the sport and want to se other people enjoy as well. This site was set up to share stories and to help eachother not to bash peopl. Good luch fishing all!

Brainerd_Area

Updated 2-6-03

The weather in the Brainerd Lakes Area has been bitterly cold this last week. Temperatures dropped down to minus 20 degrees on several nights this last week. The forecast is predicting more of the same for the next several days. The truth of the matter is that when it gets that cold, I tend to loss some interest in fishing. So the reports I'm passing on based on information from some of buddies that don't seem to know when to come out of the cold!! (just kidding) The Walleye fishing has been spotty this last week. Most of the fish have been coming out of the deeper water. 35-40 feet has been the best depth range. Smaller shinners on rattle reels have been producing most of the fish. The best bet on lakes has been Gull. The crappie fishing has slowed also. Gladestone, Hubert, North Long, and Upper Gull are the best choices. P.S. Now's the time of year to get a few of those chores on the Honey-DO this done. Because once March rolls around it'll be time for those crappie trips.

Take care until next week!

Joel, not sure why you're such a bitter man, I find your claim completely baseless. Cookie doesn't need to "follow" anyone around. Catch fish with Cookie all the time when no one's around. Don't be greedy...there's enough resources for all...lighten up.

Webmaster Thank you for your support. Telly and Todd pulled in at midnite and wanted to me to take them out to an area,so off we went. When I got out there Gary was still Fishing? he had 11 in his bucket and caught a nice 14 1/2 incher while I was there. He said they were finicky but if you worked them they would bite. 10 of his fish were caught after 8:30pm. Well I have a big crew this weekend and it should be fun, will be trying some new areas and old ones. COOKIE .

Was just up on "The Woods" the weekend of the 1st. We fished 16 mile reef all day on Saturday and didn't do to well. We ended up with 10 fish between 4 guys. It wasn't a total disaster but we really had to work to get those fish. My only tip is to keep moving if your not catching fish, this time of year they won't come to you.

Well just came off the lake, guys in sleeper are not doing well 3 fish. They did have a couple northerns that they lost. It seems when you fish for pike to close to the house the crappies stay away.Guys 100 yards away got 16 between 4 of them. Gary and his buddy only have 4. They are also close to where the guys were fishing for pike .Kevin was gone? COOKIE

I visited URL on Feb 2/3. It was the best fising trip(on ice) that I have had to date(I am only 21). The great time that I had was a direct result of information that I recieved on this forum. For anyone who is bashing Cookie; you do not know him. Cookie greeted us to URL five minutes after we got there. He gave us a good idea of where to put our house(5 crappies and 1 perch)the first evening. This was very helpful for a bunch of guys who knew nothing about URL. The second night Cookie told us the area we should put our shack; so we drilled around and found the fish(limited and fished for fun, 4 walleyes, numerous perch). If I remember correctly, there were no shacks in the area in which he told us to go. All of Hillman's(a renter) and Hudec's shacks were at least were more than a half of a mile away. It was odd how Cookie put us on the fish despite the fact that there were no other shacks in the area. Anyways, I am very thankful for Cookie's selfless acts. Cookie, you are very kind to share your knowledge of URL. You made our fishing trip! Cookie just wants to see everyone have a good time on URL.

Fishing Report(in honor of Cookie): Tackle: -Northland Forage Minnow spoon 1/16(super glow) perch color -Lindy's Techni-Color Genz worms(red) Bait: -Wax Worms! (we went through 12 dozen) -Only walleyes were caught on minnows Equipment: -10" Lazer Mag Ice auger(bring extension...it was really close) -light action rods(the bite was extremely light at times) -spring bobber attachments for our heavier rods to detect bite -Vexilar FL-8(a necessity; the fish had to be carefully worked off the bottom) Technique -Bait spoons with 3 wax worms; this provided for follow up bites upon a missed hook set -Multiple wax worms work well on Genz worms as well Location: -Hillman's(5$) -first road on right past brown house w/basketball hoop(app. 4.5 miles) Tips -Check line for blemishes after fish -Find perch in the day to locate the area for night time crappies -Watch your Vexilar and learn -Don't be afraid to stray from shacks -Try new lures after fish swim up to your lure and then swim away

Thank You Cookie Rochester Boys

Hey All, My buddy and I were up Sunday night in a shack we rented from Kelly P. You can contact him at this e-mail address waskishminnowstation.com He had just moved his house so we were the first ones in it. We caught one limit the first night all crappies between 12 and 13 inches. It's kind of sad to not want to catch walleyes but we did get a half dozen of those too. We caught 12 crappies the following hour after dusk and lost many more. We went home at 7:30. The only time the crappies came on was a two hour period starting at dusk. About 7:30 they were done. From what I heard from everyone I talked to it was hit or miss. There was another house just 100 yards from us that didn't get anything. We weren't by the big groups of houses so it doesn't necessarily mean that is the spot to go. All I can say is good luck and just have fun. I will send Kelly an e-mail to remind him of this site.

Steve

Well Joel i'm really confussed, there was a house about 100 yards from my new spot, I guess it must be yours? You must be doing well there. I will be moving my house in the future and will avoid moving anywhere near that house. I do plan on moving on to cribbs in the future. Last year in March we did real well there and would think it will be as good this year. COOKIE

Joel I do not claim to be the great red lake guide. I would feel bad if somone paid me to guide them and they got skunked. All the people I have up spend money at the local busnises so not sure where your coming from. I've had guys set up so close to me I could here them open a beer. This is a big lake and I'm sure theres room for all of us. The local resorts have been very tight lipped about there fishing reports so how would I no how there realley doing. All I'm doing is telling how my guys are doing and where to try at no time have I said go try buy that house? JOHN COOKIE Halvarson

<<Added by webmaster:

I've watched Cookie's reports for a long while. He's dead on and provides a GREAT service to this website.

For the record,

NO other Upper Red Lake resort wanted to have anything to do with this website. NONE. NADA.

They didn't even return my emails sent to them....think about that....

I wish you the best Cookie, and if you ever get a resort or guide service going...you have some free advertising from us coming your way!>>

Joel, I tried to email you but it will not go through. As I've stated when we first started fishing we moved are small house 8 times befor we found fish. At no time did I move in on anybody. When we found the crappies I put my large house in that area. when I moved I moved less then 75 yards from where I was and moved there after my friends did well there. AGAIN i DID NOT MOVE IN ON ANYBODY. I moved my house day before yesterday to an area friends had success. There is one house in the area I moved to and I do not no that person or if he or she is getting fish. Most of the people I have up fish buy my house so if they do well I have an area for someone else to try. COOKIe

Well since " cookie" isnt answering any ? about himself let me fill you in a little.

Alot of people run resorts/ice houses in Waskish. They work hard moving houses and keeping thier customers on fish. Then comes along some one who simply follows them around and sets his house right next to thiers , then comes here and claims to be a almighty scout! Sound familiar? You know who you are... Heres my e-mail if you have a response! b13joel@hotmail.com
