At least Dean (owner of Agate Bay Resort)(and in his own mind - Owner of any road he plows on our public lake)is consistant in treating his customers poorly. I to have paid his $10. fee and was blocked from wheeling my house on the lake. His reasoning is this: sometimes the people with the wheeled houses leave them out there and keep coming back and paying the $10. fee to gain access. Dean wants these people to pay a yearly rate // same as those that store their house with him. What a genious !!

More tidbits about Dean: If you do not follow Deans guidelines as far as where you put your house or where you drill your holes, he will send the guy with the walkie talkie in the one ton truck out there to threaten you with things like "move or I will crush your portable with my truck" I personally got away with not moving because I pointed out my small children in the house and also pointed out to Dean's toothless cronie that he has no jurisdicton over anybody once they are on the ice.

More tidbits: I do not patronize Agate Resort any longer but still seem to find my way over just to irritate Dean. See what happens when you bust through the snow on the edge of one of the paths he has plowed. The toothless cronie will be there with his walkie talkie and Dean on the other end telling you to get off of "his" road. It is quite amusing if you keep your cool and laugh at the arrogance this man portrays. Simply say - Dean, my GPS brought me to this spot and I work for the DNR or call the cops ya moron.

They say that the first year is the toughest for the crappies, last year 2001 survey showed the biggest hatch of all time but the next year that was deminished. Again 2002 was good and they will know next year how they do. It would be nice if they could manage for both but I do miss eating thoughs walleyes the best fish in Minnesota. They say the conditions have to be perfect for the crappies to survive ,do the walleys eat most of the small crappies? I don't no, we would have to ask the DNR. COOKIE

Hi here is my fishing report. on 2/6, 15 crappies,on 2/8,10 crappies, on2/9, 8 crappies. They all were caught at different spots. You have to move to find the fish, as i fished with 6 guys the ones that worked (moved) caught fish. Be mobile and fish a new spot every day and you should do good. Thank you Cookie,Kevin.

WOW TO THE GUYS WHO HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE @ AGATE BAY RESORT!!!!!!!! I experienced the same thing some time ago havent been back and wont go back. What amazed my friends and I was the lack of respect we recieved from the owner we also heard some words I didnt like hearing myself with having some not so grown ups with, if you know what I mean. Funny thing is we also with to eastside flamingo bay and met the nicest couple named "The Cains" wish more people ran there businesses like the Cains maybe that area wouldnt be concidered a distressed economical area. good luck fishing guys

Yeah...

why ruin a good thing. let the crappies live by having us take the walleye too. there are already tons of lake out there for walleye...why not let this lake be known for crappie. if walleye population grows then the crappie will deminish...Why??? Peeps can always go to lake of the wood for walleye. Let red lake be for crappie. Rid the walleye.

Lake_Winnibigoshish

Arrived at Big Winnie on Fri. morning Feb.07, and found travel on the lake from the High Banks public access to be good. Travel on the lake itself could be considered passable anywhere on the lake with a 4 X 4. Spent the day on Fri. moving around from Center Bar to Rocks, with limited success. Ended up on Fri. fishing the back side of Long Bar in 32 to 36 feet of water. On Sat. morning we attempted to access the lake from the High Banks public access, and got stuck. Shoveled for 1/2 hour, were observed by two truck loads of guys with MN plates on their trucks, and then they followed us onto the lake after we had busted the path. (Thanks guys for not helping to push us out, you were a big help! You know who you were!) Fished on Sat. and Sun. on the back side of Long Bar, and did OK. I suspect that when the weather warms up, the fishing will again pick up, but when the temp. stays below -10 all day, it is hard to move around, to find the fish. Our best results was on a rig that we used to use on the Bay of Green Bay. The rig consists of a #6 gold hook tied and tipped with a flat head about 4 to 6 inches above a 3/8 oz. weight on the bottom. We tried various colors of Swedish Pimples, and spoons, along with jigging Rapalas, but could only catch Northeren on them. Gold seemed to be the color of choice for the Northeren, but could not entice any lathargic perch to take the baits. Had a good time, and caught enough perch to make a couple of meals

I have been hearing alot of bad news from Dickies Resort. I can't believe it can be that bad there. I stayed at Seguchie for the last 2 years and nothing can be worse than their service and quality of houses. A group of us are going up Feb 14-16 staying in house "X". Has anyone stayed in this house? Does anyone know where Dickies are putting their houses (depth or miles from shore)?? We are looking forward to a great weekend. We travel alot throughout the day for fish. Any suggestions would be helpful. We only do this one weekend a year and don't usually fish the southeast side of the lake. Thanks

They say that the crappie explosion was a fluke of nuture ,everything lined up to the create the 95 and 97 class of fish. Red Lake is more suited for walleye and was a primier walleye lake for many years, the crappies were always here just not the numbers we have seen. People did not fish at night or as far out on the lake. As you could get your limit of walleye during the day, there was no reason to be out there after dark. The crappies will always be here just not the numbers. I remember catching crappies 20 years ago in the summer. We were trying a spot where we had found some weeds and we caught a dozen crappies, when we came in with these fish it was like so what were after walleye ,we went out to catch more but could not find them they were all over 1 lb. Here's a straight question that wants a straight answer. I've been fishing URL for the last few years for crappies and I know the trend at the present is to "clean out" to make way for the walleyes. What concerns me is this: The crappie interest in URL has never generated so much money for the locals. Why isn't it being regulated so that the crappies aren't eliminated? Why ruin a good thing?

Any time before the mayflies start hatching is the best early in the year period. Once this begins it can get a little tough for a few days after each wave of flies. Over all though you really can't complain, Cass has so many walleye in it there is always a bite. Hope this helps you out.

Debatable_Issues

What has happened to ice fishing in MN I remember when I was little my dad would take me out and we would catch so many crappies and in the last few years when we have gone out in MN it was Butt. Is it getting fished out or what, but we ice fish ND and we do good most of the time. In MN in the summer time we do ok alot better than we would in the winter but it still isnt how i remember it when i was little. I would like to put my perminent in MN but where ever I have tied that it is really Butt.I had it out on Melissa a couple of years ago and we were lucky to get 1 walleye. I have friends in school that are always wanting me to take them ice fishing but I dont really know if thhere is anywhere i can take them thats close to home. If anyone would be willing to let me know if there is some good fishing lake close to Moorhead please let me know where.

Just thought a little good news would be nice to hear about on lake bemidji. I have been catching 13 inch perch consistantly throughout the day......10-20 or more! Also a few chunky 20 inch eyes are starting to perform right after the northern bite at dusk. If any one has good eye information on the lake let me know...toad

MANITOWOC......I fish out of Schusters a couple times a year. They are good folks. Most people/reports will tell you gold jigs for LOW. I usually keep one set line, plain #6 gold hook under a bobber 6-8 inches off the bottom and actively work a jigging spoon tipped with a small minnow or minnow head with the other until I establish a pattern. As far as tackle, any of the big stores; Gander Mountain, Galyans. If you forget something, chances are they will have it at the resort. Good luck.

On 2/8 two of us fished about a 1/2 mile out of benzomatic in 11.6 feet of water. We killed the small perch and decent sized walleys, the smallest was 1.5 lbs and we caught at least a dozen. The biggest crappies I've ever seen started biting at 5pm. it didnt last long but it sure was fun. Glow blue and red flyers worked well tipped with crappie minnows. Good Luck

Basswacker, will be shooting pool with some of the Hudec boys this week and will see what they have to say . Two weeks ago sounded like they were doing real well out 4 miles in 12 1/2 feet. The weather was very nice that weekend as the temps got in to the thirties. I beleave alot of crappies were caught that weekend as there were thousands of people on the lake. The crappies seem to me more scattered with smaller schools. COOKIE

2/10/03 Fished out of liberty on saturday all day. We lost a pole in the drink and all we got in return was a 4" perch. We were out about 8 miles on the mud. From the sounds of it not a whole lot going on out there. We gave it our best with nothing to show. Two weeks is perch days I hope the bite picks up by then or 4" could do.

Fished URL for the first time on 2/7 we caught about 30 perch and 8 or 9 walleyes on crappies. On 2/8 it was way to cold out, we caught only 20 perch and 6 walleyes and again NO CRAPPIES. We tryed six different spots from 4 all the way to 8 miles out, about 20 different jigs. I think I'll wait afew year before I fish URL and wait for the walleyes and perch to grow up.
