Cookie: Was great to hear your personal story about your Grandmother, now I know where you values come from and why you are such a nice guy!! The road out of Hillmans was great, no pressure ridge at all!! We fished north of the pine tree on the left, in the same area as before. Fishing wasn't good but that is fishing!! We caught a bunch of small perch that we threw back and two nice walleyes that also went back in the lake. I talked with other people in that area and no one caught any. It was still a great day to be fishing, I was able to spend the day with my son and we were able to catch up with each others lives once again since he is in college, I don't get to see him very often any more. I just wish he could have met you, so he could have seen who I am talking about when I mention your name. Hopefully we can get up there one more time this winter and catch some slabs!! Harry

A couple of my co-workers were up last weekend and did fair. They came back with 26 after fishing 6 hours. They talked to some others at Hudecs and found out where to go. If you ask around it can save a lot of driving for nothing.

I do not go by gps cordinances as there is no structure on the lake? I do go by landmarks and milage. We move around and try different areas, when we find fish thats where we set up. I have people that come here and try different areas if they do good I make mental notes of those spots. Some of the people I have had here are inconsiderate and I try and weed them out as I don't need the headaches. Please respect the lake and pick up your garbage, field stip your smokes, the butts do not belong on the ice the lake is not a ashtray.I hate liter and always pick up my share of other people trash. I have a butt can outside of my fishouse. It is there for a reason.IF we respect others we can all enjoy the lake. Will try and give detailed report tonight or tomorrow. Have a nice day COOKIE

Heard the "pout" festival was on.....drove up for a look and chance to catch some. Never fished the lake before, spent time looking for 10-12 ft of h2o. Hard to find. Found lots of deep water, beautiful ice... Caught 2 walleyes around 5:30pm. About 20 machines went by and ended the bite. Had fun. Will be back next yr. Plan on staying a couple of days....with a depth map of lake!!!

While I have not fished on Red yet this year (we are going up in March), I have fished it the last 3. My experience has been similar to the rumors about a nonexistant crappie bite during the day. Out of over 100 crappies that we have taken, only 2 came during the middle of the day. We have learned to concentrate on crappies during the late afternoon and evening hours. We spend the majority of the daytime hours fishing for big northerns which can really be a blast. If we are ambitious, we fish on Lake of the Woods early in the day for walleyes and fish for crappies later. LOW is about an hour farther north. Otherwise, we spend the majority of the day recovering from the night before.

Group is going up for the first time. Any suggestions on location, and fishing times are greatly appreciated.

Per some rumors (true or not) the day bite is nearly zero. Please advise.

If possible, please send GPS coordinates to OLDPC@MN.RR.com. Promise not to re-dristribute.

Walleye fishing on Chain is starting to taper off. There is still some fish being caught on the humps out from Big Island. Try fishing the breaks with rainbows or shiners from 21 to 30 feet. Some fish are getting caught in shallow water at night, some in less than 10 feet. Crappies are still biting on Loon at night in 20 to 25 feet of water suspending off the bottom about 2 to 4 feet. Use glow jigs and watch your locator. Lake Trout and Walleye and huge Northern are being caught on Big Trout Lake. Fish center lake area and humps on west end of lake from 45 to 80 feet of water and be patient. Shiners seem to work best here. Only today and tommorow left so get out and give it a try. Good Luck!

Glow red has been consistant all year for us. Thursday killed them on waxies, Friday the bite was lghter and they preferred minnows. The first crappie Wayne caught was all of 14 inches and he released it, we ended up with 25 and released 10 to 15 fish. Tim and Tammy caught 16, wild Bill,Phil and Stu caught 32 crappies they spread out Stu got 6, phil got 6 and Bill got 20. Bill had a good spot. Stu and Phil got 6 of theres out of Bills house. Will be heading to West wind to clean them a little later. The bite started about 5:30pm and lasted untell 8:30. JIm got his biggest one at 2:00am. Wayne caught the smallest one i've seen all year 7 inches. Cute little guy we let him go that was 8:30 am. We only caught 3 after sunrise but I was able to watch the sun come up which I always enjoy. Lady likes to fish you must be wise, look for stable weather. Have to go got company now and will be heading out on lake for coney dogs Ummm coney dogs. COOKIE

Last weekend my wife and I and another couple stopped in to Ben's Bait on our way up to Winnie. We were very pleased with Ben and his employees and how muched they helped us find the fish. Ben gave us a few different coordinates of where the fish were biting and to our surprise he put us right on the fish. We had a great weekend and for sure will stop there again on our way through. Oh, by the way the coupons for Rapids Tackle that are in WI Outdoor News are bogus. If you do the math, Ben's bait is cheaper at the beginning before you even have to use a coupon. I would recommend you stop in to Ben's and check it out. On our next trip we surely will.

Gentelmen & ladies, Hints from this past erk of fishing at LOW... Fishing was the best we had this year {3rd trip} Went out of Morris Point Just because its only 3 bucks per person to use his road and bridge over pressure ridge... You can drive anywhere and this trip we only went out 1 1/2 miles aprox 30ft of water...ice is THICK need extension this time of year.... Fishing was like I said VERY good.. limits of decent walleyes 16-22 inches.. but the best part is the sauger were very nice also.. many 14-16 inchers....The bride and I fished the same 4 holes 3 strait days... didnt need to move in the "shallows" at all...You will still have to catch ALOT of the "cigar" type walleys and sauger, but just throw them back because the bigger ones are on the bite....HINT:..Bait of choice fatheads and anything that GLOWS.. tried many different types and styles of jigs.. but if it didnt glow bite % was way down....larger jigs worked best.. 3-6 inches off the bottom and jig every 10-15 sec.. seamed this trip to work best..Afortability:... We stayed at a local motel $35 bucks a night and bring your own portable, because you can drive anywhere this year...Hope this helps....Good Luck & Good Fishing....thrutheice

I wonder if some fishermen are blowing hot air up our a**'s about catching their limit in 15 min., and 100's of fish in one day. Heres a some words of wisdom......... Catching Perch in about 34" (32" - 36") is probably the best depth. Had our limit in 3 days (2 people). Perch are hitting on the mayflies!!!! Can't wait to do it again. Went out off of High Banks Resort about 1.8 miles. No walleyes this time, but from previous fishing experiences, we know they are out there!!!! Stay safe out on the Ice and have a blast!!!

Hello all, I just have another quick question. How does tipping work up at most of the resorts at L.O.W. Is it better to tip right away or when the trip is all over? What if I'm staying for 3 days? Should I tip daily, at the end, or whenever they assist us? Just curious. Any information would be great. Also, what is an "average" or normal tip. Thanks again and good luck to all.

Waiting for Wild Bill so I thought I would share some personel information with you. A guy name crazysonofsomthing ask some personel questions My father and grandmother were born and raised here.I have been coming to Red lake since I can remember, over 40 years,I have hunted north of here since I was 17 bowhunted here since I was 22. My father died in a car crash on his way home from Waskish when I was 18. My granmother passed away last year in April her name was olga Warren. There is a lake close to her old homstead that is named after my great grandfather. All I'm doing here is trying to carry on here legacy. Here is part of her obituary. Olga always welcomed visitors, her hospitality was second to none. She loved wild animals, especially bears. She had a passion for Red lake walleyes, wild blueberrys, and morel mushrooms. Many fishermen and hunters can attest to her open door and endless supply of Sweddish pancakes. That was the toughest thing i've ever wrote.I love and care more about Red lake then anyone can imagine. The fishing was great tonight see report below.

To all fishermen go out on the lake go out at least 4 miles find a spot, no where close to anyone. If you havn't landed a crappie by 6:30pm move to a new location away from anyone because now it is prime time . If you keep doing this you will find fish. Don't give up the fish were very hungrey tonight as they havn't been feeding for a week, they were attacking my waxies befor they got to the bottom. Please respect others space there is plenty of room for all of us. COOKIE
