Just got back from Red. Fished weds.(2/19). Got into the big crappies out of the benzenine? resort. Had an avg size of over 12.5 inches between myself and my dad an an avg weight of over a pound. We caught a limit between 5-8. The crappies were really agressive at 5, hitting buckshot jigging spoons but switched over to the forage minnows w/small crappie minnows at about 6:30. The glow jigs are definitely the way to go. Only caught two walleyes, but got 30 nice crappies. It was really fast, but we were lucky to hit the crappies at the first spot we stopped. If you're not on em keep moving. find someone who is and set up next to them.

I just got back from fishing and can say one thing. Move. We didn't do well untill we moved. The Lake is full of fish just have to find them. It seems the hot spots were moving everyday. One day would be great and the next not a bite. So bring a portable. They hit on mostly minnows and glow jigs didnt seem to matter. Keep changing your jig. It seemed when I changed jigs they looked at it longer. A vexilar is key. Most the time we had to slowly lift and slowly drop the jig and see on the vexilar if they are following or if they respond more to light jigging. Color didn't matter either. Just my opinion but it seems the fish bite when you find them. Just move till you do. Cookie was a great host. The sleeper is really nice and really clean. The guys I brought got his card and will be coming back with there kids so they can expirience crappie fishing at its best.

I fish Kab fairly regularly and have stayed at a few of the resorts. Harmony beach is a great resort. It changed hands last year and the new owners are coming around. The lake is fantastic. If your plans are to stay a week or more I would suggest you contact a guide Tim Watson. Great guy and a heck of a fisherman. He can teach you alot about the lake fishing and life. Enjoy the lake and area it is great.

The May through June and fall are the best times to fish the lake but zI have also had great luck in the middle of the summer. In the summer the reefs in the lake are the spot.

Good luck

I was up at LOW 2/15-2/18. Stayed at Arnesen's. The first night in a sleeper and the next 2 in a cabin. the Fishing was great. Caught over 250 alot of small fish but plenty of big to stay interested. The sleeper and cabins werre nice and the service was very good. Alot of nice peopel. Iwas there with 2 small kids and they were great. 1/4 ounce gold kastmasters and pimples were the key for us. A flasher works great alot of fish suspended and they were the nicer fish. Caught a nice mix of eyes auger and perch. Used fatheads and wished I had brought some shiners to see how they would have worked.

Enjoy! it is an incredible fishery

Yesterday on Upper Red was great, the weather was perfect and the fishing was good, fish for our household and fish for our guests, including folks who limited. The fish are picky and some had luck with waxies when the crappies weren't biting on minnows, with a bitetime in the 5 to 8:30pm timeframe. Our fishing license ends on the 28th, but the change in the crappie limits takes effect on May 10th (opener).

We're heading up to the big lake next weekend. We were up there on a two day trip at the end of Jan.We fished off of Elm Point in about 18 ft. of water and just hammered the big jacks. From about 1pm to about 4:30 we caught a 38, 37, and 2- 35 inch pike on a size 8 tip up rig with decoy sucker minnows on them. Can I expect the same? Shallower water is what I've heard for this time of year but hoping for more input on these monsters.See ya next weekend!

Well Brian,Paul,Dave ,Dick are on there way home with 40 fish or so. They had to move around to find them as my house still will not produce fish.Looks like another moving day in store for me. Oh well thats fishing. The guys that move around are finding fish. If you don"t have a crappie on the ice by 6:30pm you need to move..Even 20 yards can make a difference.Have a group of guys showing up at 3:30 with portables and they will be trying to find them and share there spot with me. I will point them in the right derection and see what happens. Ole only got 1 fish last night. Went and helped Gordy get his holes drilled so will be checking on him later. Mitch,Jerry, and Pat will be stopping buy for pizza tonight at the shack, as the wife and I try are luck in the house that won"t produce fish. COOKIE

WALLEYELLPOUT TRY CUTTING THE BOTTOM OUT OF A 5 GALLON BUCKET AND PUT IT ON THE ICE AND PUT YOUR AUGER INSIDE THE BUCKET. THIS SHOULD KEEP MOST OF THE ICE OUT OF YOUR HOUSE. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU.

Ken and Schmidty are both right. The limit is 10 for the 2003 season, However your 2002 fishing privleges expire on Feb. 28, 2003. What do all you guys feel? is there going to be safe ice in April. I plan on hitting the Rainy River walleye run and combining it with red. Has anybody been on the ice that late, and how's the bite.

I was on L.O.W. The last five days. Three of us got 6 walleyes and 21 saugers. We also caught 4 pound and a half walleyes. Two walleye measured 25 inches. We were at 32 and 35 feet out of Adrian's resort road. When we got there the temp was 23 below on night. Caught the big walleyes about 12 feet off the bottom. The walleye were hitting spotty. Also caught a nice pound perch. The last day we left on Feb 18 a blizzard came through. Drifts piled up about 4 feet. It took us about an hour to get off the ice. Most of the saugers were coming off the bottom. We probably caught about 100 over five days but tossed back more than half. There was about 32 inches of ice. We were using fatheads. We tried suckers but didn't have that much luck with the suckers. Great time at L.O.W.

We were talking about how to set up our fish house without getting ice in the house. The house has six holes and the dimension is 17 feet by 10 feet. There's a wood floor but when we drill we get ice all over the floor and it takes us about 15 to 20 minutes to get the ice off the floor. Is there a way to drill without getting ice all over the floor. The fish house is about 12 inches off the ice before we set it down. We would probably need an extension to drill while the house is still jacked up. Would it be possible to set up some stick markers and drill down a foot. Then back up the house and complete the drilling of the holes. Then back up the house onto the completed holes? Does anyone know how to solve this problem. Thanks.

Icer,

I haven't fished the springsteel derby in a couple of years, but when I did it was a one hole limit per person, and I believe it still is. They usually rope off an area right off of the island, so it isn't near buffalo, pretty much directly inbetween Warroad and Springsteel.

fettski, there is a way on to cross from a road downtown,by the park, and a bar dont know the name ,anyways go out from there follow the road out (cant miss)drive around the point you will see some fishoues by shore go past them a little bit then cut right there should be some fishouses or people out there ,fish on south side in about 22ft of water ,auger holes in circle pattern ,drop a glow with minnow or a jig with waxie find them and set up there the crappies move around a little so you do have some slow times unless you move around,as for biting at night ,never made it that far allways limited out quickly on 10-11inchers.

shimity Whey to go ,it is unreal when that happens,I had heard reports they did good out there but couldn't verify. Paul and Brian and there to buddys have 14, so it is slow where there at,they are set up for tonight so should do better. It was a little windy yesterday and they were content in the sleeper, but the fish are not biting under the house maybe tonight. THe westwind is the only bar and restraunt in town, I always like the steak sandwich.Hudecs has set ups and 3 2 beer, pizza and sandwiches. If your in portables extra heater is a good idea to have, just in case. Good luck COOKIE

Glade to here you found the lake! The reason the DNR wont tell you about the lake they don't stock it!!! The access is through the RAILROAD tracks you have to walk But, Remember this is why there is BIG Crappies in the lake because there is not any pressure.
