Can anyone tell me what the limit is for walleye and sauger on LOW? I heard they allow more than 6 walleye and sauger combined. So is there a later season like on the Rainy River? Last, when does the ice come off. Thanks Much.

We entered the contest March 1st. We were all disappointed not by the fish but how it was ran. Out of 7 of us we caught 8 crappies in the 1st hour. We brought them up to the judges. They were weighed and we gave our name, address, and phone to the people and they gave us a stub that said 1st hour fish on it. We seen that every hour there was a listing for 1st hour, 2nd hour, 3rd hour prizes which was a total of 60 prizes per hour. We were told that after the contest they would have a drawing for the prizes from the 3 hours. I went to the tent around 2:00 to check on the door prizes and seen a board that listed prizes. Turned out to be for 2nd hour fish caught. So we asked to see 1st hour and they wouldn't let us. So don't feel like you missed out, we caught a fish and didn't even get to see if we won anything for it. There was a good chance we did. I believe 97 crappies were caught the 1st hour. So only 60 of them got drawn for 1 prize per person per hour. It was not a happy experience.

Fished Winni Friday the 28th and Sat. the 1st, with limits caught both days. We had six guys in our "party", and the fishing was excellent in 10 feet of water on the north west end of the lake. We were about 50 yards inside of the pressure ridge that runs all the way around the lake. It didn't seem to matter what you had on for a bait, we used mainly jigs and spoons in glow colors.

WENT UP TO WINNIE ON 3-1 SATURDAY, FROM 1 TO 6, WENT OUT WHERE THEY HAD THE FISHING CONTEST, AND HEADED OVER TO THE LEFT, AROUND 2 MILES. THERE IS A HUGE PRESSURE RIDGE, THAT IS SOME WHAT HARD TO PASS OVER. THE WINDS AND SNOW ON SATURDAY, WERE A SEMI WHITE OUT. ICE WAS UP TO THE AUGER BUT DOABLE. GLARE ICE, WITH SNOWY PATCHES, VERY SLICK, AND EASY TO TAKE A ENDO. OUR GROUP CAUGHT 20 PERCH, BUT SLOW GOING AS THE FRONT WAS HEAVY, WITH TEMPS THE NEXT DAY SUPPOSED TO BE AROUND 18 BELOW ZERO, AND WIND CHILLS WELL BELOW THAT. WE BUILT A FIRE OUT ON THE ICE, AND HAD ELK BRAUTS, GOOD EATING. I CAUGHT A NICE WALLEYE AND BUDDIE CAUGHT A NICE NORTHERN IN 34 FT OF WATER. THE FISH WERE DOWN THERE, BUT WERE VERY HESITANT, THE DAY BEFORE ON FRONT SUNNY WARM DAY HIGH OF 34 THEY SLAMMED THE FISH, APPARENTLY. SO WEATHER IS HUGE. FIRST TIME OUT ON THIS LAKE, PRETTY NICE. COULD BARELY SEE SHORE LINE WITH THE SNOW BEING BLOWN SO HARD. SORT OF A WHITE WASHING OF YOUR MIND, WHEN OUT IN THESE CONDITIONS, YOU FORGET ABOUT THE TWIN CITYS, AND ALL YOUR WORRYS. ONE OF OUR GUYS, DRILLED A CIRCLE OF HOLES AND MOVED THE CIRCUIT, HE CAUGHT THE MOST. I THINK THESE PERCH LIKE ORANGE FOR THE MOST PART, I CHANGED THE JIGS UP ALLOT. THEY LIKE NEW OFFERINGS. ALL SIZES WERE CAUGHT.

fished breezy point 3-3 7:00-9:30 2 bullheads and 3 crappies the crappies were 10-11" glowing red seemed to be the best. marked a few other fish but no takers. There is one main class of crappies left in maple right now so fishing will be slow. 3 years ago we had a lot of dead crappies and bluegills that were a half dollar size from winterkill this is verified by my underwater camera. the areators are very important to this lake and we need to try and be sportsmans and limit our crappie take in the spring. the 5 gallon buckets in the spring i hope will be a thing that we dont aim for. This boom and bust of age classes is typical of this type of lake. we can limit the extremes of this by taking what you can eat and fishing for fun by releasing a few short of the limit. Remember 10 years ago how the crappies were small we will be going thru that again for 3 years so be ready. Till then enjoy the 6-8 nice crappies and dont expect the limits.

HEY our trip was a blast! We fished Friday through Sunday morning. We caught 21 slaps and a lot of wall eyes. It was the first time I brought my dad up. He was amazed that every crappie we caught was over a pound. We went out of Rodgers. We fished LOW during the day and picked up some fish. Two lakes that are so incredible and so close together. To a true sportsman it does not get any better then that. Glow jigs seem to be the ticket. The crappies that were suspended just move your jig up to them. That was the ticket for us. When the cold front came in the crappies were holding tighter to the bottom. We still caught fish though. You don't always load up on fish. That's what fising is about. You learn something every time your on the water. If you got your limit every time out it would'nt be that special! Keep fishing and pick up after yourselves. We are lucky to have such an incredible fishing resource in Minnesota lets keep it up so our children can have the same experiences that we are so lucky to have. Martindale guide service 763-262-1183 Good fishing!

If you dont catch fish it isnt anyones fault. dont get all p...... off. it is just fun to be fishing i always thought. Go somewhere else and even have hoped of catching a big crappie, in your dreams. If you catch even one of these big slabs you are addicted. I caught plenty this size in S. Dakota last summer and they were not even close to as much fun as they are through the ice. Good luck and just have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went up for the contest. 0 slabs for 4 people. Extremely cold... a little disappointed. What's all this talk about getting your limit of crappies in less than an hour. Went to another location... 0 crappies for the four of us. Are we the only ones who had bad luck. How did others do on March 1st? Believe it or not, I didn't need an extension! Isn't that something? Is this lake getting fished out or is it just me? Oh well. It was quite a nice trip up there from Aitkin (where my cabin is). Nice country. Neat experience on those ice roads. Hope the crappies bite for the rest of you. Good luck everyone.

Just came back yesterday 3/02. Auger has about 6" to spare (with extension). Sunday was VERY cold, 31 bellow (actual temp.), fishing showed it, no good. Stayed at Long Point, fished in front of resort Friday and 16 mile on Sat. Should have had the days flip/flopped, oh well!

Joyce and the boys at Long Point treated very well, no problem here!

We were out almost 8 miles, blue or red and it needs to glow in the dark. The other thing that we were doing was hooking the minnows up the rear end and then back towards the tail. That seemed to out fish the traditional way of hooking minnows by about 3 to 1. It has to be pretty uncomfortable but,it sure seemed to work.

Eight of us fished Friday and Saturday out of Hillmans. Went of about 4 miles and picked up a few. Then we decided to go out futher. Before All of us were finished drilling and setting up a few us had already picked up a dozen or so. That was at 4:00 in the afternoon, it was just awesome. Next day same area but, the result was much different. Saturday we only managed around three dozen.

Brian the salmon was excellent the Greek and I devoured it yesterday in one sitting . Thanks again , what a treat the Greek will be going to Alaska this summer and plans on bringing as much salmon home as allowed or he can carry. He's pumped, will be helping a friend commercial fish for a month then going to visit Ole for a week. Ole is here this weekend he is still looking for fish he has moved 3 times and caught 2 crappies. He went 8 miles out of Hillmen's yesterday and will see how he did later. Sounds like they have been doing real well out there.. Harry thanks for stopping by it was nice meeting your son and sure you will tie into them sooner or later, look for stable weather so you can move around a little. If were getting them when your up will gladley share my spot with you anytime. Warren and Matt went home with there limits we did well Thursday and Friday but Saturday not so good. Like to blame the weather but have heard reports of limits further out so go figure. Kellie and I went out last night 1 crappie so we let it go. Seems we are getting the stragglers as the school has move on. Jim and John caught 4 last night and were way out. Darrin and his crew also went way out and have not talked to them since yesterday. The weather was unreal saturday night 30 below spent most of yesterday getting vechicles started, and pulling guys out of snow banks, truck is getting a workout. Have to go will try and give a better report later tinight COOKIE

Just got back From URL. Had a great time! Friday, limited out in 45 min during the middle of the day, totally unexpected. Went back to the same spot on Sat and had some success but not like on Friday. It didn't seem to matter what you put down there (glow or not), when they come through they'll hit it. Fished out of portables and didn't need the auger extension, but it was close.

Pete, Thanks for the great accommodations and excellent hospitality! I'll definitely be back, hopefully yet this season. Nice to meet you Cookie, hope you enjoyed the Salmon!

Good Luck! Bri

Lake Vermillion Fishing Reports are now up and running...

Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 3/3/03

Cold weather has slowed fishing down some. The crappie bite did pick up between cold fronts and has again slowed up.

Tube jigs or jig and minnow/minnow head seem to be the best offering for crappies. Best activity in the area of Ash River/Kabetogama narrows.

No walleye action on Namakan to report, but northern pike have been active outside the shallow weed beds.

Snowmobiling is great with all trails and portages open. More snow expected this week.

Fishing on the Chain still about the same as some Lakers still being caught on Big Trout Lake. Shiners are still the best bait being used, either on tip-up or by jigging from depths of 45-85 feet of water. The panfish bite has been ok but with the cold front here it is bound to be a little slower. There has been action on a quite a few smaller lakes in the area. Greer lake to east of Crosslake still putting out both Crappies and Sunfish. Other lakes in the area having some action are Bertha, Lower Hay,Horseshoe,Mission, and North Long. Time for new licenses and trout stamps and hopefully some warmer weather to turn the bite back on.Good Luck on the ice and think spring.
