Debatable_Issues

I have read some ridiculous posts in my life, but please Rolf you are wary off base on your post. Last I recall, a GPS or sonar never put a single fish in my boat, I did. The thing you forgot to mention is that the generation before mine, meaning yours, fished these lakes to death. If you doubt me then go look in any fishing lodge that is older than 10 years and look at the pictures on the walls of the stringers of huge breeding female walleyes taken with total disregard of the consequences. Your generation had the luxury of fishing in abundant fish populations, my generation does not. Thank god the DNR has an active role in these fisheries. I hope they restrict catches further and impose very strict slot limits. I fish because I truly enjoy being outdoors with friends. We release virtually every fish we catch. 20 years ago were you doing that? I would be willing to bet you didn’t Some lakes I fish I have never kept a single fish, and never will. Those lakes are just too much fun the way they are and should stay that way. The problem as I have seen it is uneducated fisherman, locals on the lake who figure they can do whatever they want because they live there, and the very few who break the law knowingly. Lets face the facts - If you can afford $2,000 worth of fishing electronics then you probably care enough to practice conservation, are educated enough to catch and release, and are not slaughtering fish populations. And that’s all I have to say about that.

To anyone with good advice, we are heading up to Red on the last weekend in March. We are staying at Hudecs and was wondering were the best bite will be then. Is it normally a day bite or a night bite any info would be greatly appreciated!! Should a person fish the cribs or stay away from them, I have heard both on the reports.

Thanks and Good Fishing!!

Saw some comments about the limits from a few days ago....included below ia an excerpt from the MN. DNR web site..... "New limits for crappie, sunfish, lake trout and catfish will take effect on May 10, the 2003 fishing opener, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced. The limit changes will affect all inland waters and the Minnesota-Canada border waters.

Daily and possession limits will be reduced for three species, with crappie limits going from 15 to 10, sunfish from 30 to 20, and lake trout from three to two. The daily and possession limit for catfish will remain at five, but only one over 24 inches and two flathead catfish will be allowed in the total limit."

#1 son and I are heading up on Wed. 3/12/03 for a couple days of R & R - Hope to catch a couple slabs....

Say Cookie What you should do is buy a bydirectional tractor withe snow blower on one end, and ice auger on the other. Then when you want to move ice houses you just hook up and go to another spot fast. If it stays this cold much longer you might have to get power company to dig the holes HAHA

All the resorts plow roads, some better then others, sounds like all have had good fishing reports. I had guys out of westwinds, hillmens and hudecs. Either your on them or your not, If not, move find a spot at least 3 miles out of waskish and explore a area not being fished. The day bite can be any where . Bring extension there is over 40 inches of ice. There is over a foot of snow on the ground up here. The lake has drifts all over the place when you go off road ,go slow if you hit a bad area back up and find a better route. Stay away from plowed snow banks do not try and cross them, if you want to go to different resorts try and use there roads. I fished the north cribbs hard this weekend and felt we were going to hammer them, "Not" will be trying some new areas this week. The greek needs to come find some fish it is his turn. Will see how Ole and guys in sleeper did tomorrow. COOKIE

Do they still plow roads on the lake? How much snow is there? Are the cribs producing? What is the weather going to be like on the 15th? Would you go out of Hudec's or Rogers or West Wind?

Wished I had a fishing report, just looking for one. Will be staying at Grand Vu 3/13, 14. Tenth year of the tullibee expedition. Have heard rumblings of a tullie bite a couple miles out from Stony Point. Anybody know if that's accurate? How are the breakers this year, big, I suppose. Thanks

Has any one ever been to the artic, Last night had to be just like it. We were unable to fish house hop and check on every one as it was unbearable out there and did not want to take the chance of getting stuck or having trouble out there, so Kellie and i just stayed in the fish house all night. I got a 23 inch walleye and some smaller ones but no crappies, will be moving heavy house again. My good luck on picking spots this year has turned to bad luck, Oh well thats fishing ,maybe I should try other cribbs? No maybe not? Darrin and Galin moved from cribbs they ended up with 40, Mellisa caught most of them. Funny . Darrin let me use his V Plow. What a Great guy. The Greek and his sweety Kathy went home empty handed but they will try again next weekend. Mike in cabin took home fish, Keith and his crew of 9 took home fish two of the kids tied into them last night and caught them as fast as they could ,so weather had no effect,it is location location location.Brian Todd ,Don his son and friend had over 50 crappies. Ole moved today where Darrin was so will see how he does tomorrow. Dave, Vance and Jimmy are out there in one of Pete's houses and will be sleeping in my fish house tonight.Pete what are you doing tomorrow ? Might need to move house any secret spots your willing to share. Went out to the Lake named after my great grampa "Norman Lake" on the sleds what a blast, will be going there many more times in the future. Hard to get there but well worth it. The Greek smoked me twice on the sleds got me on the hole shot both times. Thats a touring sled Bill not a racing machine. COOKIE

Went fishing 3-8 out at buffulo point in 30 feet of water did ok. One limit of walleyes and sauger. Lost some nice fish to snapped line probable northerns. Get a hold of those nuclear jigs. You can get them at the Cenex in Roseau and at Denny's in Roseau. Orange or purple seems to be the best colors.

the use of high tech gagets allow us to travel to new bodies of water and still have some success locating fish. with out depth finders & gps we would have to cover a lot more water. i don't have time for that.

Brainerd_Area

Someone forgot to tell the weather man that Spring is suppose to be coming. It was 21 degrees below zero at my house last night. The brutal cold and the fact that all permanent houses must now be off the lake has made for some less than favorable ice fishing conditions in the Brainerd Lakes Area. The sunfish have seemed to be ignoring the cold however. For those individuals that don't let the cold daytime temperature bother them, there has been some pretty good bluegills taken on North Long, Upper Cullen, and Lower Cullen Lakes. The key locations have been in 8- 12 feet of water on the backside of good weed beds. Euro Larva and wax worms on small tear drop jigs have been working well. The crappie fishing has improved this past week. Round, Gull, Upper Gull, and Hubert are still the best bets in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Small minnows on light jigs have been producing the most fish. Key locations have been deeper water areas next to fast breaks. The water depths have varied from 30-45 feet.

Make sure you bring a extension for your ice auger! We just keep making ice!! Take care until next week!

I just moved to this area and wondered about this cat fishing I have heard so much about. When do they start running?

I am also looking for a few good spots to teach my little boy how to fish at. Does anyone know of some place close to grand forks to teach a little guy how to catch walley or cats?

Most all the bars are giving up some nice Perch limits. The drop in front of the birdhouses, middle of Sugar (work it east) and the Humps are the bars. The gold Perch forage minnow jig, firetiger & glow rainbow fire-eye minnow, perch color glow devils & the angel eye jrs are the best baits. Tip them with a ½ a fathead minnow and fish in 32' to 35' of water. Move, move, move tell you get on the Perch. There is several ice heaves on the lake now and do not cross them. They are solid one time and open up the next time you try to cross. Check at any resorts where the heaves are and how to go around them. We now have 30"+ of ice and 2" of snow cover.

I forgot to add - if you do access nottage by the tracks it is soo line policy that you stay a minimum of 4 ft from the rails. The rails can not be crossed accept at the township road. There is enough room to access the lake from the toe of the slope, some brush would have to be removed but a great trail would be accessable right to the waters edge and clear of the tracks. At this point the property line is not 100% clear so if you are not sure homeowner will surely push tespassing if a foot is stepped on his property.
