4 of us just got back from Zipple Bay and had an awesome time. Caught well over 100 walleye and sauger, mostly small but kept about 30 in the 13-16" range. Jig or minnow choice didn't seem to matter much.

We went to LOW and went fishing. We didn't get crap. We caught a total of like 25, and only 2 were keepers. And they were small at that. We went over the island if you come off of Adrian's and then another 3-4 miles on top of that. It was SO foggy on Sunday. Where on the Minnesota side is a good spot for fishing. I seem to have no luck. I swear when the fish hear my name they scram. Thanks!

Fished center bar on Sat. In 30-35 ft of water. Did well. Drill a lot of holes and move till you find them. A lot of water on ice. Make sure to talk to resorts on conditions. Use fatheads. All the perch were 11-13 inches with a few bigger than that. ice is still 36 in thick. good luck!

Fished URL on wed night got 6 5 miles out of hillimans. Fished friday and got 2, 4 miles out of hillmans. Fished saturday and got none just small perch. Was 10 miles out on sat. Some firends limited in 20 min. 5 miles out on sat. Sounds like the spot was out of Hudac's 5 miles. Heard several good reports. Mostly just enjoyed the great weather. Ice was over 45 in. thick. The pressure ridge out of Hillmans was pretty tall on fri and they kept moving the bridge. Use it!!! Someone found out the hard way. Looking to head up again this weekend time to get in touch with Cookie. Hope it cools down the ice will get bad fast if not. Picked up a lot of trash. People aren't listening. Good luck!

Just got back from Oak Island ,fishing with my buds Fri.And Sat. March 15,16. Did real good Walley, sauger and a dozen or so perch. Did'nt limit out but if we had one more day we would have. Stayed at Angle in lodge and had an excellent time. They really take care of you. There guides will put you on fish. Jig color of choice for the locals is gold, but I think we got half of our fish on chart./white glow jigs. Same colors for jigging raps. Joe Liberty

went up to l.o.w. March 14-16 out of Zippel Bay. 3 of us caught 102 fish in 2 1/2 days fishing. Most were small walleyes and saugers. Rainbow chubs were the best choice of minnow, try using an orange hook on a rattle reel or jig an orange buck shot rattle spoon. Good Luck

Anyone have any idea what kind of conditions will be found in 2 weeks? Whats it gonna take to get out? Still driving? 4 wheel ATVs/snowmobile? Anyone know how thick the ice is right now? Have been there once and it was about 4 feet a month ago. Thinking about heading up in 2 weeks. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

We fished Upper Red Lake on last Saturday night. We had a great night. However, the sportsmanship demonstrated by some fisher-persons was less than admirable. I am speaking of parties who move into an occupied area and setup less than 50 feet from a group with an icehouse portables in place. Take a look around, nobody enjoys combat fishing conditions.

Cookie, we finally nailed them, what a weekend! A couple buckets full of crappies and 60 degree t-shirt weather, We rented a sleeper (which turned out to be a tin garden shed with leaky roof) from Hillmans Friday night, caught 3 crappies 8 miles out. Got tired of garden shed and moved towards shore about 3.5 miles out of Hillmans and set up our portables in an area with nobody around us for 300 yards. Bingo! Couldn't keep the perch & walleyes off the hook all day long, then at 5:00pm we had the first of 28 huge crappies. However we should have followed the caravan off the lake at 9:00pm but stayed till 10:30pm and had to deal with a very intense fog limiting visibility to 50ft. and flooded ice. Once we located the new location of the bridge and got across you couldn't see where the road was due to water and fog, finally made it to shore but with white knuckles. All in all, it was a great trip! Key to our success was being away from all the large groups and spread out. Good luck to all and be careful up there.

We were fishing at Zipple Bay in 28' about 12" off the bottom. Also caught 1-27", 1-32" 2-37" pike on frozen smelt on tip ups. It was a great weekend and the weather was perfect. Good luck and have fun

The loopers are biting. I was up off of the French River last weekend and there was 6 inches of ice with 40-50 fish spotted all day long. (I had a nice one on but lost it) Other guys did much better. The bait of choice was waxies, and the really successful guys were using spawn sacks. (I was using crappie minnows). The fish were in a negative feeding pattern so it was tough getting them to bite but peak lunar times seemed to be the best. Last week the ice went out and I think the guys are shore casting but I'm not sure. The ice is in and out up there and can be very dangerous. Nothing better than ice fishing for those babies though, watching them in 8 ft of clear water is something else!!!

Just got back from fishing off of Adrians road. Caught several fish but only kept 5 walleye, 7 sauger and four jumbo perch. Fishing was consistent for the most part, with several Tulibee and small sauger/walleye being cauught. The walleye that were kept were nice fish ranging from 2-5 pounds. Good Luck to everyone.

Hey Cookie, Thanks so much for your tips and hospitality. We had a great day out on the ice with the two little kids. We only managed to get 7 but really weren't there all that long. We had to drive back to the cities. Like I said, this will be my last trip untill the ice is gone. I might try to hit the lake for the day before walleye opener on the way to LOW. For all the people reading these fishing reports, I'd like to add that Cookie is a really great guy. I've been to URL 3 times this year, the two times I ran into Cookie, he has helped find fish and gives me some pointers. Not to mention the fact that his theories about where the fish would be coming from and when they would bite were accurate. There are very few people in this world that will make a stranger feel as welcome as Cookie. A real class act. See ya next time.

jerry my email is cookie16@paulbunyan.com Mitch can you email me if you get a chance as we are looking for a spot for my sweetheart Kellie to get that 16 inch crappie. The weather was unreal this weekend I,m sure more then a few people got some sunburns.Kellie hurt her Knee this weekend and was not able to enjoy the lake or the weather. Most of the guys did real well this weekend,Crazy Bill was up with his 2 boys Brandon and Dillon, they were out of Hudec,s 5.7 miles and to the left Bill said they got on to a school of fish and started chasing them towards shore They would pop 4 holes and run ahead as the other 4 would drop there lines for a few minutes, they would nab a couple then run to the next holes Dillon said he caught 32 fish they gave some to other guys that wern,t doing to well. Bill said they chased them 150 yards and it was crazy, did anyone see this spectecal? That crazy Bill just goes nuts for these crappies and always looks for the crappies he will not stop untell he finds them. My house did not do that well again but many fish caught around house, they seem to being going north east again and I need to cut them off before they turn . Kinda hard chasing them like Bill with a 5,000lb fish house? Chris and Jim got there limits in a matter of minutes out of Hudec,s then broke a spindle on there ultra shack coming in. The coney king and his son Nick and friend took home all there fish and moved around alot. The Greek got all his fish but gave them to the guys in my house saturday night as they only got 2 all he does is give give give couldn,t ask for a better friend. Darrin ,Galin and Randy caught all there fish friday night and fished for fun saturday, nice guys and always willing to help others. There is some water along shore but ice seems like it is in good shape just need the shore line to stay together. Still plenty of ice but alot of snow melting might have to pull house off tuesday will have to keep an eye on the weather. The sweethearts birthday tomorrow Happy day before your birthday . I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART COOKIE

I went up this weekend for the first time went pass the turn and ended up in Lake Of The Woods picked up some Walleyes and cook them on the lake for our morning meal,4 feet of Ice there. Now the Best went Back to Red Lake, "Our original plan" I went out five miles turn left at the split and about 500 yard. For the first couple hours was nothing but little Purch. There was couple that set up their shad about 10 feet from me and within an hour got their limit and left. I continue to catches purch and baby walleye. A gentalman by the name of Bill and his friend was catching good size of crapies. I could not stand the Purch anymore, I asked Bill for the secret. After the tips form Bill, I was catching Crapies every time I put in the minnow, sometime two to three crapies with the same minnow. Within two hour I had my limit and some. I have to drag my my friend from his hole because he was still pulled in crapies. The trip was worth it. I am thinking of going again this weekend, if I could still put my Ford-350 on the lake.

This year looks like it will be a GREAT year to fish cohos and small kings. In the past when we have had a late spring with hard ice like this year the spring fishing for salmon has been exceptionally good. Trolling along the beach front of Park Point in shallow water with stick baits on the surface is the primary bait of choice. If you can get in shallow water and fish the wave troughs which are deeper that is where the smelt hang out and the fish go to get an easy meal. If you tire of the shallow water fishing going deep for lake trout on the bottom in the spring is always a sure thing until the surface water warms up. Normally fishing with downriggers in the 130 to 150 foot depths will provide fast action for lake trout. At this time of the year the bottom temps at this depth are actually warmer than the surface temperatures on the lake. This phenomina stacks the lake trout up on the bottom as water that is 4 degrees celcius is the most dense and heaviest and drops to the bottom. Hence the surface temps on top are cold and the bottom temps are 39.5 degrees F.

Cookie!!!!!!! Wow. That's about all I can say.. I took some of your advise and then moved only twice. Friday Night was ok 3 crappies and 2 walleye's. Then I went out along the pressure break on Saturday and Killed them. I've not caught some many nice crappies in the past 15 years. I hit a small hole and my friend fished about 200 yards north of the pressure break and I was about 150yards off the main road. But I limited out and tossed about 10 back. The best bite was around 7:00am until 8:30am and then again at 6:15pm-11:00pm I was in crappie heaven. My largest was 2-1/4 pounds at 16-1/2" Mounting that and his cousin at 1-3/4 pouns 15". but after those two I was in the 13"-14" range. Oh I got 1 nice walleye around 3-pounds. I'm planning another trip thier the first week-end of April. Hopefully the ice around the edges will be nice. Here on Minnetonka the edges are going fast and if the weather stay's we are done here..

Oh who saw the truck go in? What a stupid jerk to think he could jump the pressure break. Warning if you valve your toys be alittle smarter.. Wow I couldn't beleive someone would have even tried that stunt.

Later cookie and thanks for the info. I owe you. the prime rib was great. You'll have to e-mail me back so I can repay you for the info and bring another friend down to stay in your houses. Let me know

Thanks again Mitch

Cookie: We ended up catching 5 crappies, the crappie Gods just weren't with us tonight. It was probably the nicest day I have ever spent outside fishing in the winter!! It was gorgous! It was also nice driving through all that water to wash off the bottom side of my pickup. It was good to get all that salt off!! What was the deal with that pickup putting its front end in the lake at the ice heave? I had a family friend (Chuck) and his son(Adam) along for their first trip up there to fish. Even though the fishing wasn't good it was just great being outside and enjoying the weather and each others company. I don't think I will be coming up any more this year because of the ice conditions. Harry

I normally fish the small lakes in Iowa but this year I made it to Red Lake and Lake of Woods. We are heading to Nester Falls for crappie tomorrow night. I plan on doing more big lake fishing starting next year and would like to know opinons on what would make for better travel on the lakes a snowmobile or atv. What ever the answer could you suggest a make, model and engine size. The selection seems to be limitless.
