Thanks for the ifo on the Vexilar to be used as a locator on boat. I fished Red and Lake of the Woods with my son from Grand Rapids at Christmas. Didn't know ice fishing was as big a sport. Very few fish the ice here. People won't beleive me when I tell them that you get 2 to 3 thousand vechicle on the ice at once. If anyone needs bird hunting info for Northeastern Montana, Call me at 406 385 2223, or E mail me at clfscrft@ nemontel.net Thanks and have good summer fishing. Rember, worst day fishing is better than best day working.

You may use an FL-8 in a boat, in fact, you may buy a special transducer that mounts on your boat.

By mounting it (the special transducer) on your boat, you can just leave it there. Now you can use the FL-8 in summer and in winter!

Miles, did ya drive out? I was planning on driving up, just me and the black lab tomorrow morning. I'll walk out if I have to. I would like to find the crappies though. Five hours away, I'll be doing whatever necessary to find'em. Any suggestions from anyone? Got some relatives that'll be their to but I doubt that I'll find out where they are. They got wheelers. I won't till next year! Also, what time of day did ya fish? Thanks to all for any info.....

Was up at the French (Freedom) River on Tues. Tried to catch a looper or two. I had no luck, but saw a few nice ones brought to shore. It seemed like the farther you could cast out the beter chance you had at landing a few. Kamloops,(aka loopers), are a hybrid trout, and are stocked by the DNR.

Hawk/ The slot is anything can be kept under 17 inches and one over 28 inches. This begins on opening night at 12 midnight and will continue until further notice. The limit is still 4. There are mixed feelings on telling what you caught. Your information is voluntary.

I have done some research, I just want to have it straight. Is the slot for walleye 14-16" from opener to when the night ban is off, then we have to throw back everything between 17-28"? Also it is a good idea to under estimate your catch when talking to the people asking questions at the landings, that way the hooking mortality isn't blown out of proportion

As of today, the ice along the shoreline is still holding out in front of our place for ATV access. People did quite well fishing yesterday with limits coming off the lake of very nice fish. We did not get any of the rain and maybe 1/2 inch of the snow that was predicted for this area. It looks like that with the cooler weather that ATV's should be able to access the lake through the weekend.

The ice is going fast with the warm weather and travel is limmited to ATV only for the shore lines are lines with water and are going quikly. AS of this last weekend the fish were slow but activly biting as the front moved in. IF the weather continues to be warm like so id give ATV travel another week or so but conditions are worsening for we put the front end of the truck through near shore on saterday night.

I'm glad you and Zack had a good time Phil. That was the last night for that house there as in the morning it had a lot of "neighbors" 15 to 20 feet away. Hopefully you didn't let hal drive? hehehehe That "tank" is designed to move fast! It'll make 25 mph cross country and 40 down a good road. One place that Buck missed is Mort's on the south shore. As of tonight they were still allowing pickups out there. 218-647-8128

Miles, had a couple guys out last night, they were 6 miles out of Hillmens and did not do to well, They moved in about 3 miles and went north. One of the guys got 11 in a row the others did not do to well. I would go out about 2.5 miles and then work your way north. If you don't have fish after dark you will have to keep moving to the north. All accesses are closed to trucks will need a snow machine or atv. Good luck let us all know how you do. COOKIE

I would suggest calling the access points to URL and get the ice and access conditions right from the horse's mouth as conditions are probably changing by the hour. I pulled up the phone numbers for most of the access points and will pass them on. Plus Cookie may not be able to check everyday so just give them a call.

Plus, Westwind & Rogers Campground has websites that will give current conditions.

Good luck and be safe! Buck

Cookie - I'm planning on fishing Red tomorrow. I've gone 3 times out of the south side and only have 6 fish to show! I would like to go out of the north somewhere, but sounds like can't drive on the lake anymore. Is there any drive-on still available on the north end? And if there is, I would like a hint on where to try it (having never tried the north end before).

thanks. m.

Some of the guys came up with 4 wheelers today, they had a heavy trailor and did have trouble getting out with such a heavy trailor. They ended up towing there portables out and leaving the trailor on shore.Kellie and I went out on 4 wheeler and had no problems, the ice seemed to be in pretty good shape. It was a little slushy the first 100 yards then turned to solid ice. Went out about 6 miles the ice was 3 feet thick, did not mark any fish tried a few spots but were more out for the ride then fishing. Will see how the guys do tomorrow, they said they were going to move if they didn't have fish buy 7:30 they were still in the same spot when we headed in. I would like to meet you sometime your a good guy Cookie. I'm a fishing guide out of Becker M.N. I was out last week on a local lake and picked up an empty case of beer cans + food wrappers. I don't care if people drink just clean up your mess! The worse thing I found this year was three old Marine batteries on the ice. I grabbed them and it pissed me off. Do you ever think about the new generation of kids that deserve the chance to fish waters that don't have beer cans, food wrappers and batteries on the bottom of the lakes. We had the chance. Let's give them the same chance. I hope there is a few people out there that feel the same. Not a fishing report but a reality report. Thanks guys just had to blow of some steam. Thanks Martindale Guide Service 763-262-1183.

Way to Kirk, wondering what happen to you? Was the trailor OK? Talked to Buddy Hillmen last night. Wheeelers only as they have removed all there equipment off of lake.Sounds like you can cross the pressure ridge where the bridge was as they packed it with ice with a back ho.I do not have a wheeler so have not been on lake ,could take sled but would have to drive in some mud and not sure I want to do that.Temps have dropped it is 32 at this time. The lake conditions are day to day a quote from Buddy Hillmen. Fishing sounds like it is excellent. Will have to keep eye on the weather.May have some guys coming up today with wheelers, the key is the same, if your not getting them move, saw guys fishing next to pressure ridge 2 nights in a row so would assume they were getting them there. Remember use common sense it is only a fish. If your out there can everyone do Waskish a favor and pick up some of the trash still left on the lake it is a shame that their are still people out there that leave there trash. How does some one leave a 1 gallon glass pickle jar on the lake? I would like to go swimming this summer with grand kids and do not want to worry about the kids getting cut. Thank you COOKIE

Fished 3.5 miles out of Hillman's on Friday and did very well, Thanks to the advice of people on this site. Saturday we drove out of the south side because the access was in much better shape and only got 3. Oh well, should have listened to Cookie.

We stayed the weekend at West Wind in our sleeper shack on shore. I would not recommend this resort to anyone going to URL ! Very overpriced, very rude and unwelcoming staff. They made us feel as if we were trespassing from the moment we got there, with the exception to the guys at the baitshop who were genuinely nice and helpful. Thanks to everyone on this site for all the info.

Whitefish_Chain

Hello again from the Whitefish Chain. First off and foremost, Please use caution heading out on area lakes, the last two weeks have had a major effect on the ice. I would not recomend any veichle traffic except the use of ATV`s , I`ve been walking. Fish bite is ON with many reports of fish being caught on many lakes around. On the Chain, Loon, Bertha, and Clamshell all putting out some panfish. Work shallow water as fish have moved in, use baits like Genz glow jigs with minnows, waxies, or larvi just under ice as they seem to be there.Drill lots of holes, than let sit for a bit before fishing, cover ground. No need for locator as most fish can be watched thru hole. Other lakes in area are also producing action, try Lower Mission, Bass, Horseshoe,Goodrich, and Greer. Stay shallow 5 to 10 feet of water for best luck.Keep close to weeds. Again, please be cautious on the ice as will change every day with the warm weather. Check out my website for local forecast. We seen many Geese and Ducks while fishing yesterday and also Eagles all ready sitting on nests.Good Luck and please remember to release the big ones.

Ended up fishing out of Rogers this weekend. The access was a little bumpy for the first 1/4 mile but after that it was in terrific condition. Large group to the west and a smaller one to the east. We ended up splitting the difference. Beautiful weather and the fish were biting from the get-go. What a way to end the season. If the temps stay the way they were though ATVs may be the only way to even think about getting out there. Our group of 7 guys filled out and were off the lake before 6PM. Before we left some others came out and were catching fish as we were leaving. So I would assume that they just keep on biting for them as well. the largest fish that I caught this weekend was 1lb. 9ozs., most were in that 1lb. 1/4ozs range though. Just one more cold front would be nice.
