No sweat, Dave. It's all about having fun and helping a local charity, but winning a prize would be nice! I've caught fish the past 2 years in a row, but never made the top 150, so I'm hoping to break the spell this year. Stay warm and enjoy - there's some really great people out there.

Hi Morris and Hallett families!! Thanks for the nice testamonials!! Fishing has been pretty consistent! We seem to catch some walleyes each night, and if you are an experienced angler you may catch a few more!!

The ice is very good over at Hole-In-The-Day Bay!! There is 14 inches of nice, solid ice!! Vehicles driving all over the lake!! The key (I believe) to the contest is either luck or prayer!! But yes, there are some nice pieces of structure to set up on. I would have to agree with the deep theory. I usually set up in 38-60 feet and jig with a spoon or a rap or something!! It is a good idea to get set up by 9:00 a.m.! Just wander around until you find a hole at the depth you want and set-up!! It's first come first serve!! Good luck and I hope you here my name as one of the big winners!! It's an awesome contest, and the best part about it is that all the money goes to charity!! Walleyedan

We are coming from Menominee, Michigan for the fishing derby. What we are wondering about is how you get your fishing spot? Are you assigned a spot or do you just pick one out? If you pick your own spot, do you have to get there at daybreak to get a decent spot? Also, what kind of water depths are in the derby area? How are the ice conditions right now? We would appreciate any information any one can offer. Thanks, Mike

Dave, Just heard that they're expecting a near record crowd (around 13,000) for the contest. In my experience on Gull and in the contest, most walleyes are caught on jigging spoons or raps tipped with minnow heads. I've had good luck with glow, but I may try rattles this year. I think it has more to do with picking a good hole than specific baits though. I've seen some real pigs come from the deep edge of the fishing area. That's where I usually am. Hope that helps ya! Have a good one.

Rented a house from Walleyedan last weekend. In five hours on the ice two of us kept 7 walleyes threw 4 back and lost another 5 included two in the 3 lb range right at the hole.

Call walleyedan and he will take care of you. You will also be able to keep enough fish for a meal unlike Mille Lacs.

Hi Chad! I have been on Gull alot recently, and I would have to say the bite has been pretty good (not awesome though). I personally have not caught any hawgs yet. a 23 and a 24 incher were the biggest thus far. We have an average of 8 inches and there is about an inch of snow (perfect for the 4 wheeler!). We have been catching our fish in about 30 feet of water on jigging spoons! I have fish houses for rent, so tell your buddy's! Good luck at the contest! Walleyedan

Howdy fello fishermen's and ladies. My wife and I plan on attending the Extravaganza on Gull Lake. I would appreciate any information that anyone might have on the ice conditions and snow conditions on Gull. Also, anyone fishing on Gull, would like tips on what the big eyes are biting on. Fishing here in lower Minnesota is "FINALLY" picking up. There is an average of 8" of ice on most lakes and by the end of this week with this weather we should have a good 10" of ice. People are just now venturing out in their pick-ups. Good luck fishing and thank-you for any extra info you can give me.

12/18/02  Full Moon Tomorrow!

Hi everyone!  Well, normally when it rains on the ice you lose ice but this time it was freezing rain so does that mean we gained some ice?  All I know is that it is going to be slick!!  It was even slick in the woods tonight as I gave it one last try (deer hunting with bow and arrow).  Saw one deer (a dead one that I think my brother in-law shot on the second weekend of gun season).  It had 4 points with another broken off on one side, and it had a brow tine with just about 4 or 5 inches of the main beam on the other side.  So I'm guessing it was a 9 or 10 pointer!  I cut the rack off and my wife thought to give it to him for Christmas (he is new to the sport and it was the first buck he had shot).  It's just to bad that we couldn't find him right away!  If nothing else, the scavangers sure did have a feast!!

Fishing!  I was last out on Sunday and caught 2 fish ( a 22 incher and a 12 incher) I had a few others come up and take a look, but no bite!  I was using a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head and I was in about 20 feet of water.  I'll be out alot more starting tomorrow so I'll finally get the feel for what is happening.  Round lake had been hot, but I heard through a friend that it cooled down Friday.  It's possible that the spot they were on might have just been "burned out".

It looks like we are going to get some winter afterall!  Looking at the weather channel tonight they were calling for the cold to return Sat. or Sun. (highs in the teens and lows in the teens) that will work for me!  I have had alot of interest in my fish house rentals and starting this weekend things are going to pick up.  The ice on Gull varies from spot to spot.  If I were to give an average I would say there is 8 inches (AVERAGE!!).

Everyone always starts asking me about this time of year if there is going to be enough ice for the extravaganza.  And I tell them yes, because it's still early.  The contest is not until the 18th of January.  Who knows we might have 4 feet by then.  The contest runs from 12-3 on Gull Lake's Hole in the Day Bay!  If you haven't fished it, you owe it to yourself.  You will have a blast (even if you just watch all the people).  If you need more info you can call 1-800-950-9461 or go to www.icefishing.org.

Tip of the week:  If you haven't tried an underwater camera, winter is a great time for it!  I have a few Aqua Views, so if you want to try one, rent a house and I'll let you use one!

Have a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!!,

Was fishing on the 371 bay of North Long Lake this morning(12\4), about 8-10 inches of ice, between 7-11 am, caught a 12lb and 5lb northern, a 3lb largemouth, and a 4lb walleye, all on shiners, in about 12 feet of water.

12/4/02
Hi!  We're making ice!!  Not only am I making some nice ice for the city of Baxter's hockey rinks, but there's also some nice ice being made by Mother Nature!  Last report I think I told you that Gull had been frozen, but with the winds it wasn't sealed up everywhere.  But now, I think all areas are frozen (except by bridges etc..).
There have been people out on most area lakes (including Gull) for weeks now!  I have not been out!!  Pretty sad, but you know about those priorities.  I'm thinking my prioroty list needs to be tweaked a little!!  I heard a rumor yesterday that someone had driven a pick-up out on North Long.  I'm sure it's prbably true!  This is the time of year to take extra caution because some lakes have close to a foot of ice, and accross the highway on a different lake there is an ich or two!  Be carefull!!
I should have a house or two out by Sat. if all goes well!  When I do get them them out, they will be on walleyes so book your house today!  If you have been reading my reports, you know that I have been looking for more houses and I am finally getting some lined up (via friends etc..).  I'm hoping by mid December I will have at least a half a dozen of them out.  I am still looking though, so if you want to unload an eyesore from your yard (asuming it's in fair condition), I'd like to take a look!
Some of the lakes that I know are safe are:  Round, North Long, Pelican, Green and I'm sure many others.  The few reports that I have heard have been good!

Tip of the week:  Put the boats to bed, I think winter is going to stay for awhile!  Although I did here that it is suppossed to be warm next week!  Who knows!!  Not us!!!

Have a nice remainder of the week and weekend!,

11/25/02

Hi!  I, just for the second time today wrote 10/25/02 and then realized it is November.  I knew it was November, but things have went by so fast this fall I'm wondering where the time has gone!  Right now it actually feels like January as the temps. are suppossed to be down in the single digits tonight.  The lakes are freezing over and some are being fished (through the ice).

I drove by Gull this morning at around 9:20 a.m. and the wind was out of the west and Hole-In-The-Day bay was wide open.  When we got back from town around 12:30 p.m. most of the bay was iced over!  I haven't witnessed that before!  I'm guessing by now (8:06 p.m.) that there isn't much for open water on the whole chain.  I'm sure there will be a patch or two of open water, but it should freeze up pretty good overnight!  That is great news for us winter sports enthusists who lost out on alot of winter last year.

I told you last week that this weeks report would be more exciting, but not by much!!  I have been pretty laid-up since last Thursday when I went in and had the "Big Snip, Snip"!!  It hasn't been fun, but I think 3 kids is fun enough.  I don't know how people can deal with any more!!

Needless to say I haven't been out getting the fishhouses ready but as soon as I feel up to it, I better get in gear!  Because I'm thinking at this rate we will have them out in a week or two!!  Way to many things going on!!  And of course one of the biggest things looming in my mind is Mr. Buck, who I haven't been able to pursue as of late.  I was out the morning before my surgery, but only the squirrels were moving!  I will get out after him again, but I have to make sure I can pull my bow back first!

Tip of the week:  Make sure if you venture out on the ice that you are very confident in the condition of the ice!  You're better off waiting than wading!!

Have a nice Thanksgiving!!,
