Gentelmen & ladies, Hints from this past erk of fishing at LOW... Fishing was the best we had this year {3rd trip} Went out of Morris Point Just because its only 3 bucks per person to use his road and bridge over pressure ridge... You can drive anywhere and this trip we only went out 1 1/2 miles aprox 30ft of water...ice is THICK need extension this time of year.... Fishing was like I said VERY good.. limits of decent walleyes 16-22 inches.. but the best part is the sauger were very nice also.. many 14-16 inchers....The bride and I fished the same 4 holes 3 strait days... didnt need to move in the "shallows" at all...You will still have to catch ALOT of the "cigar" type walleys and sauger, but just throw them back because the bigger ones are on the bite....HINT:..Bait of choice fatheads and anything that GLOWS.. tried many different types and styles of jigs.. but if it didnt glow bite % was way down....larger jigs worked best.. 3-6 inches off the bottom and jig every 10-15 sec.. seamed this trip to work best..Afortability:... We stayed at a local motel $35 bucks a night and bring your own portable, because you can drive anywhere this year...Hope this helps....Good Luck & Good Fishing....thrutheice

Hello all, I just have another quick question. How does tipping work up at most of the resorts at L.O.W. Is it better to tip right away or when the trip is all over? What if I'm staying for 3 days? Should I tip daily, at the end, or whenever they assist us? Just curious. Any information would be great. Also, what is an "average" or normal tip. Thanks again and good luck to all.

LOW-Zipple. Bring a vex and don't be afraid to try pulling the fish off the bottom. Water is clearer this year. Deeper the better during the day.

zippel area of the lake is mostly flats, with hard or soft bottom. This time of year all day fishing is usually 28-30 feet deep over the mud--catching sauger, walleye, burbot. you can fish in shallow (10-15') for walleye--this is usually a morning/evening run, but who knows what you might catch middle of the day??? If fishing is slow, try snowmobiling or pull tabs.

Heading to LOW for the first time on 3-7. We rented a sleeper out of Zippel bay resort. What structure are we likely to be fishing? Any Advice? We are also bringing portables so we can move if we have to. If the walleye fishing sucks, what options do we have?

icefisher,

buffalo bay is a great place for monster pike, but you will need a manitoba license (about $18 u.s. funds) there is no slot limit on the manitoba side on pike, unlike the u.s. side. late february and march are when the pike fishing gets hot, i would try the mouth of the reed river, or on heppners bar, right where it runs into the telles flat on the north end. i was there the past two weekends, and the pike are biting slow. we did have 8 flags between the two of us over the weekend, and the fish we did get on the ice ranged from 5-15 pounds, but i did see a few bigger fish caught. the walleyes were biting like crazy, but lots of small ones, we did manage to keep 12. as far as u.s. water goes, for big pike, try off of springsteel resort, the mouth of the warroad river, zippel bay, or rainey river in baudette. lots of big pike at zippel. make sure you bring dead tip-up bait with, quantities are hard to come by up there, and bait is small (5-6 inch herring). I had better luck last year catching bigger fish with smelt in the 7-9 inch range, and the smellier the better!! good luck, and if you fish manitoba, remember to pinch the barbs on your hooks, they do check you on the ice at times, plus it is a lot easier to get the hooks out of the fish quickly for a better catch and release.

MANITOWOC......I fish out of Schusters a couple times a year. They are good folks. Most people/reports will tell you gold jigs for LOW. I usually keep one set line, plain #6 gold hook under a bobber 6-8 inches off the bottom and actively work a jigging spoon tipped with a small minnow or minnow head with the other until I establish a pattern. As far as tackle, any of the big stores; Gander Mountain, Galyans. If you forget something, chances are they will have it at the resort. Good luck.

Was just up on "The Woods" the weekend of the 1st. We fished 16 mile reef all day on Saturday and didn't do to well. We ended up with 10 fish between 4 guys. It wasn't a total disaster but we really had to work to get those fish. My only tip is to keep moving if your not catching fish, this time of year they won't come to you.

I will be going up to Arnesen's March 7th-10th and I was wondering if anyone has heard any information about the bite at all. We will be staying in the sleeper houses. I know that jigging is the key on L.O.W. and I know that chubby darters, sweedish pimples, jigging rapalas, gold and glow baits are key. However, if there is any other good bits of information that would be helpful it would be greatly appreciated. I think we will throw out a tip-up or two also and I was wondering if I should bring big suckers or shinners for some big beaks or roaming eyes. ALSO, I JUST WANTED TO SAY HOW COOL THIS WEBSITE IS AND I'M GLAD THAT FISHING FIN'ATICS CAN GET TOGETHER AND CHAT AND SHARE TACTICS.

Was up At LOW feb 1st weekend, We caught a couple hundred walleye and sauger just like the reports have been saying.BUT we could have fit most of them in our beer bottles. We had to keep moving constantly to find bigger fish, and had to use shiners. The bit was hot but fish were very disapointing in size.

Here is my 2 cents. Fishing sucked. Read all kinds of reports from multiple sites. Talked to multiple locals and bait shops. Talked to about 10 people on the ice in different spots and they all said the same thing. I saw one guy with a bucket full of 16-20 inch sauger and walleye at 16 mile in 32 feet and he said he hadn't caught them in his current spot, as the fish are thrashing in his bucket and his setting the hook again. Lying bastard. He was using spottail shiners and a littler lead head and jigging. Other than him I saw alot of people with minimal fish. Long way to drive to not catch more than a few cigars and one ugly eelpout. Ice was about 30 inches. Seamed to be in OK shape but was really bumpy even for a big truck. Made it threw without having to use an extention but barely. I would bring it though.

ok, here goes. A sauger is basically a walleye, they have spots on their dorsal fin and no white spot at the tip of their tail fin. They dont grow quite as big but taste just as well. You catch a lot on Woods. And the Lake it selve is a very large and vast lake, almost nothing around you once you get out there, but the surroundings are beatiful, hope you have a blast and catch some fish, look for those saugers, youll get quite a few of them.

Fished the flats 1/24 out of Warroad and had minimal luck - mostly goatpecker sauger caught in about 27 ft. Red seemed to be the color. Moved on 1/25 and fished out of Adrienes (11 mile) and caught more smaller fish in deeper water - about 35 ft. Around 3:00 on 1/25 tried fishing out of Sportsmans on the river and caught a few bigger fish, but nothing note worthy. Word was the reefs were the place to be.

I have a question about what depth everyone has been setting there lures off the bottom. Alot of people say from 3-6 inches off the bottom but we had pretty good luck the last couple of times when our lures were 1-3ft off the bottom. If u are consistantly catching small fish move your lure up and down to find the keepers!
