Name: Brandon Upper_Red_LakeFrank Himmingway, Fishin Master, whatever you call your self(by the way I can tell you are the same person by your remote name), Please, if you have nothing valuable to contribute to this forum then don't even bother writing. I would hope you could find something better to do with your time. I think most of us appreciate all the input a person can get here but comments like yours make us wonder why you would even take the time to write them. Name: fishin master Upper_Red_Lakei went out on tues the 18 and drank a 18 of beer and brought home 18 fish. its just a tip Name: phil Upper_Red_Lakecoming to url this weekend w/ my 6 year old, to meet up with grampa hal to try to catch some crappie. had pretty poor luck in past but i know their down there.right place right time right presentation...ive been reading the postings all winter wishing i could contribute, but only been up one other time. cookie you put out good info for all to read, honest info...granpa hal has a place on the lake im sure you know him, hope to meet you some day.kelly p knows hal well.wish us luck as i'd love to have my boy catch the fever... hal see ya tomorrow phil Name: frank himmingway Upper_Red_Lakei was out on march18 me and a buddy filled out on nice slab crappies using only cigerate butts. we even had a northern or somthin in the order grab a crappie as we were reeling it up but we werent able to land it though we were right off westwind. we went right when we got on the ice we were apporixamently 1/4 mile off shore we fished from about 8 to 12 then we made the drive home with acouple buckets of fish. we even had a few nice walleye in the pail. Name: Fuzzz Upper_Red_LakeLooking for a access report Heading up on Sun 3/23. Wondering like everyone else about access-4x4 trucks still getting out or bring ATV/Sleds for insurance. THX from FYI from St.Cloud Lil technical for most but probably correct. Hard to estimate any lake when 4/5ths is controlled by others. Is their data accurate? I Agree 100%on the comment (Just get out and try it for yourself) As far as hello from Roseau goes I did’t know that Crack Cocaine had made it that far north! If not I have some Ocean front property for sell in Arizona!!! CHEAP PS: Thx for all the good info cookie Name: Pete Upper_Red_LakeHello, was going to go up to Red Lake this weekend March 23-24th. Was wondering if you could drive on the ice with a truck or is the ice to bad. Please someone let me know. Thanks, Pete
Name: wangberg Upper_Red_Lakei am hearing people saying that atv would be better, but is 4x4 truck okay? if no let me know then i will bring my atv.i meant MATT (bs ville) not hello from roseau. my mistake. hope you all catch more slabs.. let me know if truck is ok to drive this week? thanks, good fishing. Name: FYI Upper_Red_LakeI just wanted to say that the whole reason that this crappie bite has been so good is that there was actually a phenominal hatch about 6 years ago, it was the ONLY good crappie hatch and red lake is actually not a typical crappie lake meaning that there is not really suitable spawning habitat. It is a complete mystery as to why the crappies had such a good hatch that year, however considering that crappies have an average life span of 8 years, we probably have only 2 years of good crappie fishing left. Since the crappies were all hatched the same year, they almost all weigh between 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 pounds; on the average. There are some larger, but they are fairly rare. Don't be fooled by reports of 2+ pound limits, they just aren't happening. Also, due to the sketchy bite, I would suggest just getting out when you can. Don't worry about reports, just get out and try it for yourself! Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeBuck the action can be great in the early summer depending on the wind. Caught fish on the cribs last year and even donated a few jigs to them. Some people were fishing them at night last year and getting fish. The crappies spawn on the northeast end of the lake and in front of Hudecs can be great its all in the timing and weather conditions. They also move into the channels and river. Again it is in the timing. Watched people catch fish in the river last year and they have a nice public campground on the river. Do not know the fee for camping but it does fill up pretty good in the early summer. COOKIE Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeJUst made the rounds and here are the details as of noon. Watched a ram 3500 deisel with 4 wheeler in back pulling a ultra shack go out of Hillmens. Talked to Buddy said when you hit the ice you need to go to the right of the old road as it is deteriated, his bridge is fine at this time . Talk to Hudecs they are letting 4x4 out, no cars recommended, there bridge is a little rough but no problems at this time. There were 4 guys cleaning fish from last night said they did a lot of hole hopping but they had 2 buckets and 1 cooler full of fish. Not sure how many guys but they were happy. They were using green glow jigs.Talked to Westwind they are reccomending atvs at this time. Cusin Pete is thinking about bringing his sleeper out for the guys from Cat says he will be checking the conditions out a little later. If any one knows the ice it is him. Very experianced he knows his stuff. Seems to be plenty of ice out there just need to use common sense, if you have atvs, I think you should bring them but that is only my opinion. It is cloudy and the temp is 36 degrees at this time. Cookie Name: CrappieFever Upper_Red_LakePanning on heading up to URL tomorrow, just wondering how fishing has been. What depth seems to be working? Name: Scott Upper_Red_LakeThose guys from Roseau have never been able to read a scale or tape measure accurately. Name: Scott Upper_Red_LakeThose guys from Roseau have never been able to read a scale or tape measure accurately. Name: Buck Upper_Red_LakeCookie, whats the action like in the summer for these crappies? Have you tried looking for them during the summer months? To Nettinyahoo, I was up to URL a few times before we finally got into them last weekend. It's like any kind hunting or fishing, some time needs to be put in before it pays off. Move around and stay away from the big groups of people and it'll happen. Don't get discouraged, because when you start hitting on these crappies all the time you've put into it will be well worth it. Not everyone can be like Hello from Roseau. (Thank god!) Name: Perch Jr Upper_Red_LakeWe are still planning on heading up to URL on the 27th, we are wondering how the ice will be and is it going to be safe enough for a 4x4 truck. Or should we bring along our ATV? Also has there been alot of water on the ice, have been reading the reports and it sounds like there has been. Just wondering what and how to pack everything?? Thanks and Good Fishing!! Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeTodd I met you at Hillmens Sunday ,would like to know how you did. Said you were going 6 miles out. Fish have been very active in between 3 and 4 miles. they seem to be moving in. Don Hudecs said they picked up a few not to far out. Buddy was going to fish a spot on this side of there pressure ridge last night so will see what he has to say. This guy hello seems like he might be a kid just screwing around from reading his post. COOKIE Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeHave some cleaning to do around here then will be checking with Hillmens and Hudecs. Marles at Hillmens has a picture of a couple that are holding 3 fish that are all over 15 inches. Ask to see it as a picture is worth a 1,000 words. I saw the picture and they are huge. The biggest crappie I caught this year was 1 lb 11 oz. a very nice crappie in my book, did not measure it but had to be close to 15 inches. That was in Jan. COOKIE Name: BOBBY Upper_Red_LakeWE WERE ON RED SATURDAY THE 15TH WITH 6 OF US FISHING. WE HAD GONE OUT 5 MILES AND STARTED FISHING AROUND NOON. LOTS OF PERCH, WHICH ARE GETTING A BIT BIGGER, JUST NOT BIG ENOUGH TO KEEP YET. WE GOT 1 PIKE THAT MEASURED 35 IN. FUN FIGHT ON 4LB LINE AND A GENZ ROD. CRAPPIES DIDN'T START UNTIL 6.30PM, BUT WHEN THEY DID IT WAS FAST ACTION FOR ABOUT 45MINUTES. AFTER THAT WE WOULD PICK UP A FEW HERE AND THERE. WE DID MANAGE TO LIMIT WITH 90 FISH. THE SMALLEST WAS 13IN AND THE BIGGEST WAS JUST SHY OF 15. ALL NICE FISH, BUT DIDN'T SEE ANY OF THOSE 2LBS:}..... CAN'T WAIT TO GET BACK UP. GOOD LUCK TO ALL...BOBBY B.
Name: nettinyahoo Upper_Red_Lakebeen to url 4 times now. best we've ever done is 4 crappies between 2 portables. tons of pesky perch during daylight. wish i knew what sort of magic tricks some of the people on this site are performing, especially roseau. what's next? i'm waiting for him to say that a 60 inch musky attacked a 15 lb. walleye that had eaten one of his 2 lb. crappies. Name: wishinwasfishin Upper_Red_LakeRoseau obviously does not get it that no one believes he is catching what he says. Come on, all the crappies over 2 pounds get real. Like it was stated earlier, we wont good info not fish stories. I dont believe there has been a report of 2lb. crappies all winter. Go somewere else and try and convince them that you are catching these fish because we dont want to waste our time reading your false reports. Name: hello Upper_Red_Lakei was just out there last night again and it was ok fishing I didnt quite get my limit of crappies but all the crappies were over 2 pounds they were huge i didnt know what i was catching i thought it was a northern a couple times and i did catch a northern it was 45 in and i had a scale and it weighed 18 pounds i also caught some walleye not as big but i caught 2 that were 8 pounds and a 5 pound.i am going out there again tonight mabeye ill see some of you out there Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeJust watched a dozon trucks come off the lake at Hillmens, Will check accesses tomorrow and talk to Hillmens and Hudecs in person .Will keep everyone updated. Name: mona_nelson@hotmail.com Upper_Red_LakeHi, thinking of coming for the weekend of March 21st. We would like to bring our permanent houses, will we be able to get them out on the lake with our 4wheel drive? Name: Timmer Upper_Red_LakeHeading up on Fri. unless I hear "no" from all experts it's full throttle. Please let me know. I thank you. Name: wangberg Upper_Red_Lakei agree with HELLO from roseau, i think that there was no 50 inch northern caught, if so, that would be a new mn state record and i dont think there also was a 15 pounder too, this is a website to let eachother know what they caught not just full of s... anyways we like to hear stories but not liars. how was the biting this week of wed the 19th? wondering about reports, hoping to go up this weekend thanks. good fishing Name: Scott McNamee Upper_Red_Laketesting font fix Name: curt Upper_Red_LakeATTN: Cookie or Roseau,We are heading up on 3/20 to try and fish both Big winnie and Upper Red.We are not planning on bringing 4-wheelers,we called and someone said we will be able to drive 4x4 trucks with no problem. Can you please give me the real poop cause I would hate to leave the wheeler at home and have access problems. You guys do a great job with info and this site and I want to tell you how much I appreciate it.Thank you so much for your kind help. Name: Matt Upper_Red_LakeTo Hello from Roseau, This is an honest website. Not a website for liers. For one thing I have never heard of a northern bite during the night and for another I have never heard of a walleye caught out there yet this year over 6lb. let alone walleyes every night over 9 lb. I personally think you are full of s***. Personally I would like to shake your hand because you must be the greatest fisherman on god's green earth. Name: hello Upper_Red_Lakei was 6 miles out at about 3 in the morning i was almost asleep in my house when they started byteing on tuesday i went out there again and there was 2 of us this time and i caught a 10 pound walleye but no northerns we still filled out on crappie in an hour once again i heard this from my friend and he has been out there a week straight and he has caught a walleye over 9 pounds every night and a northern almost every night except for 2 nights and every night he filled out on crappie he will be eating crappie for breakfast lunch and supper i hope you have as good of luck as i did Name: hello Upper_Red_Lakei was 8 miles out of west wind at about 2 in the morning i stayed in a sleeper and on tuesday i caught a 10 pound walleye but no northerns there was 2 of us this time and the fishing was as good as it was on monday hope you have good luck like me Name: Brandon Upper_Red_LakeCookie, Can you do us all a huge favor and give a report on the landings Friday Afternoon/Eve. Thanks a million. Sounds like a lot of guys trying to get back for one more weekend of action with their trucks.I know the next couple nights are suppose to be a little cooler up there but not sure that is gonna make a difference.
Name: pah Upper_Red_Lakeheard the lake is covered with water, 18". any info on the condition of the lake would be great,ie when the water flows under the ice. want to come up this wknd but not sure if it would be a waste. all the landings will be closed soon im sure.atvs will get out. honey combing is when the ice starts to weaken due to warm temps.water and air get in to the ice... wont be to long and the crappie will get a little break. Name: Luc Upper_Red_LakeExcuse my ignorance. When you say "honey combed" what exactly does that mean? Thanks! Name: hozer Upper_Red_Lakehey what are tullibe???? Name: hogger Upper_Red_LakeWhat is the chance of driving out on the lake this upcoming weekend? How is the fishing, how deep, color? thanks Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeTalked to Don Hudec still allowing 4x4 trucks on the lake but no trailors, Talked to buddy hillmen 4x4 trucks. Would not recomend cars at this time. The sun is shining here and is 44 degrees, was told there is some honey comb ice in some areas. Saw a 4x4 dueley go out of hillmens with his 5th wheel. Parked 5th wheel by the pressure ridge next to the bridge. COOKIE Name: Dana Upper_Red_LakeMy dad and I are going up to Red Lake this weekend and we are wondering if you can still drive out there with a van. I someone could tell us if the ice has honey combed yet or is it safe, it would be greatly apprecialted! Name: Dana Upper_Red_LakeMy dad and I are going up to Winnie this weekend and we are wondering if you can still drive out there with a van. I someone could tell us if the ice has honey combed yet or is it safe, it would be greatly apprecialted! Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeCurt glad to see you made it home safe. The guys did real well where my house was last night, so there goes my theory about moving 100 yards,or maybe ite such a big school thay are 100 yards to the north east. Saw some guys way to the north east last night, must of been out of Hudecs wonder how they did. WE are fishing out of Hillmens 3 to 5 miles out, will be checking all accesses today and give a updated report. COOKIE Name: Curt Upper_Red_LakeCookie, Thanks for renting us your house. The boys really had a good time. The fishing was great. Our only regret is we didn't fish with you Monday night. Live and learn. Good luck the rest of the year. Will see you next year. I think the boys already have it in the works. Thank you Curt Name: West Wind Upper_Red_LakeI thought I would post a Lake Access report for West Wind. With the warm weather it is not looking good for anything but ATVs and snowmobiles for the weekend. The ice is starting to break up on the sand bars, the ice is still safe its just the problem of getting to the safe ice. Unless the weather changes dramatically our access will be ATVs and snowmobiles only for the weekend. I thought i would post this now so you could all make plans if your coming or not. The fishing has been picking up as of late, so it is still a good time to fish. I am not sure how the other accesses are holding up, you will need to contact them and find out. Hopefulley we get some colder temps and everything works out but it aint looking good. If anything changes I will let you know. Name: matt Upper_Red_Lakefishing was great this weekend, 2 of us limited out on sunday night in about an hour. we were about 5 miles out of westwind but didnt drive on there. with the warm weather forecast does anyone from around there know who controls how long they allow veichels to continue to drive out? And do they close some accesses and let others remain open, because the accesses on the southside had little to no standing water this weekend but the ones on the north side didnt look like they could stand another couple weeks of warm temperature. would like to make one more trip up the last weekend of march, so any info form locals would be helpful. thanks and good luck Name: Fishin Fool Upper_Red_LakeNo special permit is needed to fish on Upper Red~that is not part of the indian land. Best bitetime is right at sunset. Fish are biting great, accesses a little wet, but if all goes as forecasted we should be driving out there for more than a week with vehicles..just depends which access you go out of (I always check with the access owners before going out as they are the only ones who really know the conditions of the ice and heaves since they are the ones working the roads every day) Great size to the fish, found one business that has some great pictures on their site so you can actually see how their people are doing, no fibbing on their reports, pictures back it up so the fish are biting. Good luck Name: Fishin Upper_Red_Lake(Hello) Roseau, Any hints on where you might have been or what time of day u fished?
