Cookie, I would not be telling anyone where I was catching fish either. Next thing you know you got 3,000 people around you that have no respect for our lakes up here. Man I see alot of trash on our lakes!

As for the rest of you, not everybody know's that you cannot keep walleyes on Red Lake due to the moratorium. Perhaps they do now. Maybe they simply alluded to the fact that they caught their limit of walleye. Education does not have to come with a price, simply put, you cannot keep ANY walleye you catch on Red Lake. Keep all the Northern, perch and crappie you want. Also keep your garbage too would ya! Happy 2003!

Sorry if I sounded like a smart*ss with my comment. I understand the frustration for those of you who saw the walleyes disappear from the lake, but I think most people are like me in that they just want to catch fish. I wouldn't keep a walleye and I would guess most of the other fishermen are the same way. You are going to have an idiot or two breaking the law wherever you go.

Hows the Crapies biting on Red Lake. We're are going up the week-end of the 18th of January. Do you have a grid Quard for a good spot. We only make it up there once a year and would like some help. Please give me some tips. Thanks.

I'm sorry about how I may have come off about the walleye issue. I'm just a little sensitive to the issue since I watched the eyes disappear the first time around--it was heartbreaking...

Looking to do some fishing next weekend on Red. Any suggestions for a good spot to go out of? Also, for those people who are ripping on others for commenting about walleyes; RELAX. I won't be keeping any walleyes (I probably won't even be keeping any crappies), but I too would like to hear if people have been catching them. Just because people are catching them does not mean they are keeping them. Ever heard of catch and release?

Thanks for the replys, I knew what the regs say, I just didn't understand why people were talking about the eyes they were catching.

Seems pretty tough to catch a limit of eyes when no one else on the lake is keeping them.

While we are talking about the DNR, Has anyone been checked for licences, I have not seen one game warden yet. Just wondering if they are still circulating.

For those anglers that who are too lazy to read the regulations, or are simply being unlawful and are award of it, stop taking walleyes from Upper Red Lake. IT IS ILLEGAL! You are voiding a teriffic act of restoration.

I don't understand why people are talking about catching their limits of walleye on Upper Red or asking about the walleye bites there. Since 1999, the walleye limit on Upper Red Lake has been 0. Hopefully, for your sake, the DNR won't check this site...

I have been up at Lake of the Woods the last 3 weekends and may try Red this weekend. Usually fish out of Rodgers but have not had a lot of luck in the past and it sounds like it is pretty slow there yet. Any suggestions?? Where is Rocky End Cove?? I have heard they have been hitting there pretty good. Anyone fishing off the Cribs?

Yeah the Red Lake bite is slow for sure, but it will pick up in the next couple of weeks!

In the meantime, I am catching my limit of crappies daily on a lake close to here. Not as big but at least I'm not going hungry! Keep the ice clean!

Friday 1/3 Two of us caught 7 crappie, all between 12-13”. Lost several more on the way up and at the hole. Caught a few walleye as well. The hottest bite was from 4:45pm to 6:15pm, but a couple of stragglers were caught up until 10pm.

Saturday 1/4 Mostly fished in the evening again. Caught one crappie around 9am however. The bite was slower, but we caught another 7 crappie, all measuring 12-13”, between 4:30pm – 10:00pm. The fish were extremely finicky and slow to bite. Small gigs and tiny minnows were all that would entice them to bite. Caught one 4 pound walleye and a few smaller walleye.

We were on Red for the first time this last weekend. Got on the lake by 11:00 AM both Friday and Saturday. Plenty of nice fish were caught both afternoons. Don't really have any information on the evening bite because we were off of the lake by 4:30-5:00. Keep drilling holes until you find a soft bottom.
