Fishing Reports for Minnesota Fishing-Archive
Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeWent out to check house ,dropped the vex and lo and behold caught 3 slabs all over 13 inches. Guy next door didn't have any. He was impressed and offered me breakfest, bacon and eggs should of stayed but had to get back home. The wife and I will be going out tonight and have dinner in the shack, we will be practicing catch and release so maybe will get that 15 incher. Wife is after a 16 inch crappie if she gets it we will have to mount it. COOKIE Name: DCHFISHING Upper_Red_LakeFirst tome fishing the lake. We went out of Hillmans landing. Set up next to the first group of shacks to the right of the road. We were right next to a rental unit #58. Hooked into some nice northerns, 2 over 30" and one just under and always the fish story of the bigger one that got way, tangled himself up in another tip up and cut the line. Not a single Crappie, people around us only reported 4 total all day. We got on the lake about 9AM and left at 6:30.Wishing we would've went over to the bigger group of shacks and been a little more mobile when the fishing was slow in one area.Going off the lake after dark and with four hundred more portables on the ice everything looked different. Should've used the GPS I had in the bag.The road were plowed all day long and were a super highway when we headed off. Red glow spoons and jigs is what we heard were hot. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeRay and Josh are headed home with 30 CRAPPIES. Josh said the nicest crappies he's ever caught. They are looking forward to cleaning them, they will be impressed with the fillets. Wild Bill took off so no report from him, I would think he got his limit as he always does. Ron and Scott got 30 they fished 2 days ,evnings only.Rob's group left so have no idea how they ended up. If your reading this Warren love you and can't wait to see you. Wheres my cards? PS Hows my spelling? Name: Drake Upper_Red_LakeYesterday seemed to be more of an late afternoon and early evening bite, with folks saying that they didn't catch there first one until the 3 to 5 pm time frame, and some nice crappies were caught..talked to one group of three who had 41, group of two who had their limits. Then today the bitetime changed with a more productive bite starting at 7:30 this morning and going steady until 10:30 and folks picking up some here and there through the afternoon. (Spots that proved hot yesterday cooled down this afternoon) But a group of four had 48 that weighed in up to 1lb 13 oz. The glow jig colors that were very productive this weekend were green glow and red glow, with good reports from orange glow this afternoon, and tipped with a minnow. The access owners at Hudec's, Hillmans, Westwind, Rogers and Morts are all good about letting folks know where they have gotten good reports from and where they have found some(of course a hot spot yesterday may not be the hotspot today). Someone mentioned Kelly P., he's not an access owner but does rent ice houses...the folks in that area are Terrific, a very friendly and helpful bunch of people. Name: Steve Schaefer Upper_Red_LakeI'm heading up to URL on 2/5 with my son. Any advice on fishing this lake. This is our first time. Thanks for your help. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeThere are 4 plowed roads on the lake in waskish.Westwind,Hillmens.Hudecs,and Aggasee They will point you in the right direction. I do not own a resort. I live in Waskish Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeI would try suckers for northerns.Gloww jigs work well for crappies try different colors, crappie minnows work fine. The waxies work but they seem to like a couple on the hook. If your not catching fish after dark you need to move its always nice to have extra holes drilled in the area as they can be biting 10 feet from where there not biting. If you have a vexilar you can jump around and find fish feeding ,work them off the bottom if they are there you will mark them . COOKIE Name: Cliner Upper_Red_LakeBringing three fishing fanatic kids (all under the age of 11). Looking for any tips the weekend of the 7-8 of February. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeWent out on the sled today there must be 5,000 people out there. Rob and his bunch found some fish in a new area said when they pulled up 2 guys were pulling them in as fast as they could get there line in. That was around noon. Rob and them set up and had a few when we stopped buy. Wild Bill moved over by my house,he will fish untell he gets his limit if it takes all night funny. I spose when you drive that far? Two guys in cabin had 2 and were waiting for the night bite, hope they do well. Name: Harry Upper_Red_LakeCookie: Sorry this took so long to get back to you but since I went fishing yesterday I had to get caught up with my work. My wife and I want to thank you for guiding us to a good fishing spot!! We ended up catching 15 BIG slab crappies. For each one we caught we missed 3, so as you can see we had a lot of action. It was an excellant trip and far exceeded my expectations, we had a fun time and really enjoyed ourselves. For the people reading these postings, I need to tell you that COOKIE is really a nice guy and true sportsman! If he tells you the fish are biting you can believe him. I have never met a fisherman like him before. He is willing to tell you all that he knows about fishing, such as where to fish and the color hook etc. He even told me I should bring my extension along for the auger which is a good thing to do because there is about 30 inches of ice. If he tells you something you can believe him, he is truly a good person. Once again thank you Cookie for a good time from both of us and I hope to come up there in a couple weeks with my son because he has a day off from college. In the sport...Harry Name: Red neck Upper_Red_LakeCookie, What resort do you run. I'll be up there at URL the 7-8 any advice would help and do you have plowed roads that are marked.. In the Sport...Harry Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeWent and checked the fishermen last night. Ron and Scott had 20, Duane and Gene had 27 buy 6:30pm and tried to fill out, fished untell 8:00 ended up with 28.They said they lost quite a few ,them 10 inch holes make it tough. Brian and Mike showed up with 2 buddies they didn't do as well. Brian got 8, Mike 4 ,other 2 got 5. Did not check with Tracy and his buddy. I did not wet a line, still looking for a spot to move my small 2 man house COOKIE Name: Red neck Upper_Red_Lakefirst timer on URL. can any one help me on what size-shape-colored jigs should I bring. How thick is the ice, do I need an extention. where should a guy set up for northerns and what bait works best. Two of us will be up there Feb. 7-8 Name: NoHitNelly Upper_Red_LakeOur group fished out of the West Wind January 24 & 25 with 6 guys in two shacks. It was slow; 10 crappie in the two days. It all depends on your location and timing because they are catching them around the shanty town when we talked to people at night having grub and brew at the West Wind. All of the crappie we caught were nice, 12.5" to 14", we just wish we'd hooked a few more. We did pull in a 34.5" Northern on a tip-up the first day. Not many walleye, just 5 little ones caught and released. It's a great lake and well worth the experience. Another group of guys from here were up the week before us and caught 50 crappie, all nice sized. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeWent out at noon to clean up house ,caught 2 on rattle wheel? Taking 2 guys out there in a bit, expect to see Brian and Mike out there they were fishing LOW today. Will try and wet line myself tonight. Cusin moved his houses today to a hotspot he says.I wouldn't dought it at all. He knows his stuff. Set another guy up in my area last night so will see how they did today COOKIE Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeHillmens bridge was down for about 1 hour yesterday, the pressure ridge heaved up so it took some manaual labor to repair, mother nature can realley pay havoc. The fishermen need to be patiant when things happen like this. These guy risk there lifes to repair these areas. A bunch of bitching does not help. I drove out at 6:30 pm and there was some standing water but made it over fine.It is scary driving through water but the crack is covered up.COOKIE Name: Greg Upper_Red_LakeWent up to URL 1-30-03. Arrived at 1430 at Hudec's and found out pressure ridge had given way. Went out of West-Wind. Got six and many walleye. Nice to see the Walleye coming back. The ridge should be fixed by morning but I wouldn't count on it. We 4X4'd across from West-Wind's road to Hudec's and had to cross 6-8 inches of water near the ridge. Call before you go. The fish are biting around 1700. Not sure when they stop since we only got six. Nice weather, don't dig in until you find em!!! Name: John Upper_Red_LakeComing up on Saturday and was wondering if i need an extension for the auger yet. Last I heard the ice was about 23-24" two weeks ago. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeJust came off the lake. Guys in house are doing well. Brang 4 guys from wis. out to the area i'm fishing they were doing well, met Brian at Hillmens took him out at6:30pm he had 7 when I left at 8;45 . Sent Harry out there today they had 10 or 15 and missed that many more they were way happy.Jerry from rainy got his limit and left. All and all looks like they all were getting fish. Name: Cory Upper_Red_LakeWent out of Hillman's two nights ago, sure wish I had a GPS. went about a mile (approx) past the end of the road. Between the two of us, we caught 42 crappies with the occational walleye. Non-stop between 5:20 and 8. Small glow red and small glow peach seemed to be the best...just off bottom Name: 7Guysgungho Upper_Red_LakeHas anyone found success using ruby reds? Plan on bringing a few scoops if anyone has had success in the past with them. Is a vexilar recommended based on the fact the URL is relatively shallow? Name: Cookie Upper_Red_LakeTalked to guys in my house last night they had a bucket full and said missed as many more .Talked to Mark from Hudecs he said some guys are getting there limits. Some areas are having a day bite from what Im hering .I mostley go out in morning and evning but where Im fishing did have a good day bite for a while. If your fishing for northerns with large bait it seems to chase the crappies away so Ive stopped fishing for them out of my house. Twomanywalleyeguy good call on my spot COOKIE Name: Tom Upper_Red_LakeThanks for the tip goatpecker! Largest was 14 3/4 in. and the smallest was a mere 13 in. Unbelievable. Only one wally. We found if you weren't using glow you weren't catching anything. Also, they were very finicky, so the smaller the better. Fishing right off the bottom. Set lines didn't do much - jigging was where it was at. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeWent to westwind to clean my fish yesterday what a great place to clean fish and at a great price.
