Fishing Reports for Minnesota Fishing-Upper Red Lake-Archive
Name: Fishman Upper_Red_LakeYeah... why ruin a good thing. let the crappies live by having us take the walleye too. there are already tons of lake out there for walleye...why not let this lake be known for crappie. if walleye population grows then the crappie will deminish...Why??? Peeps can always go to lake of the wood for walleye. Let red lake be for crappie. Rid the walleye.

I come to red lake just for the crappie.

Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeThey say that the crappie explosion was a fluke of nuture ,everything lined up to the create the 95 and 97 class of fish. Red Lake is more suited for walleye and was a primier walleye lake for many years, the crappies were always here just not the numbers we have seen. People did not fish at night or as far out on the lake. As you could get your limit of walleye during the day, there was no reason to be out there after dark. The crappies will always be here just not the numbers. I remember catching crappies 20 years ago in the summer. We were trying a spot where we had found some weeds and we caught a dozen crappies, when we came in with these fish it was like so what were after walleye ,we went out to catch more but could not find them they were all over 1 lb. Cookie Name: TJO Upper_Red_LakeHere's a straight question that wants a straight answer. I've been fishing URL for the last few years for crappies and I know the trend at the present is to "clean out" to make way for the walleyes. What concerns me is this: The crappie interest in URL has never generated so much money for the locals. Why isn't it being regulated so that the crappies aren't eliminated? Why ruin a good thing? Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeStraightshooter tried to e mail you .Did not go through. The guys in sleeper are not catching fish , Rod came in they ended up with 18 fish for 2 nights of fishing in sub zero weather. Rod is going out again and try the small foam house? They were very happy with what they got and want to come back ,nice guys they will always be welcome here. Kevin called tonight he caught 8 Sunday night and his buddies only got 2, hope to fish with him next time he is up here .Just didn't work out this weekend with the rough weather conditons. COOKIE Name: DumbHick Upper_Red_LakeOn 2/8 two of us fished about a 1/2 mile out of benzomatic in 11.6 feet of water. We killed the small perch and decent sized walleys, the smallest was 1.5 lbs and we caught at least a dozen. The biggest crappies I've ever seen started biting at 5pm. it didnt last long but it sure was fun. Glow blue and red flyers worked well tipped with crappie minnows. Good Luck Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeBasswacker, will be shooting pool with some of the Hudec boys this week and will see what they have to say . Two weeks ago sounded like they were doing real well out 4 miles in 12 1/2 feet. The weather was very nice that weekend as the temps got in to the thirties. I beleave alot of crappies were caught that weekend as there were thousands of people on the lake. The crappies seem to me more scattered with smaller schools. COOKIE Name: DCHFISHING@aol Upper_Red_LakeCookie, Could you please give me some info on Hotels,Motels and resorts for this Sat. night. Bringing my son up to catch some bigger crappies. Will be accessing the lake from Roberts this time. Last time we came out Hillmans landing. Caught big Northerns but would like some crappies. Thanks for any info anybody could give me. Dave at DCHFISHING@AOL.com Name: Redneck Upper_Red_LakeFished URL for the first time on 2/7 we caught about 30 perch and 8 or 9 walleyes on crappies. On 2/8 it was way to cold out, we caught only 20 perch and 6 walleyes and again NO CRAPPIES. We tryed six different spots from 4 all the way to 8 miles out, about 20 different jigs. I think I'll wait afew year before I fish URL and wait for the walleyes and perch to grow up. Name: chis Upper_Red_Lakewanted to say sorry and thanks to gooseslayer for picking up our crap off the ice. too much to drink. fishing was great even though garret couldnt catch a cold if he wanted to!!! Name: Webmaster Upper_Red_LakeGood point Kevin. I did not say I had contacted ALL resorts, but it may look as though that's what I meant. MOST were contacted, yours was not one of them. Sorry about the misunderstanding! Name: Kevin Upper_Red_LakeI personally feel that this site makes the resorts on upper Red Lake look bad by saying none of them wanted anything to do with this site. I personally do all the web site information for West Wind and I have never been contacted in anyway about this site, I found it on a search engine one day and I think it is a very good site. I just thought I would throw my thoughts in there on that because the resorts on URL do all they can to help provide service to the fisherman. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeBrian looking forward to seeing you again, To bad about Milacs, you should check out Fish lake east of Harris it is a small lake with some great fishing about 2 hr. drive from your place. COOKIE Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakePaul from Deluth, there has been some talk at the Red Lake Nation offering spotfishing in the near future. There is a article in the Bemidji Pioneer paper dated Sept.20th 2002. At this time these portions are off limits to all non band members. Name: cookie Upper_Red_Lakejust went for a walk down to the lake, what a beautiful night, the stars and moon are crystal clear. Todd and Telly made the big move yesterday in that bitter wind, they ended getting 10 last night and 3 this morning. They were very happy and said they will be coming up again soon. Great guys even though they did not bring home 60 fish, they had a good time. Kevin called today from the lake they were looking for a day bite and I never got a chance to hook up with him he said he got 10 last night and buddys only got 2. Brian and his crew had a cooler full and left last night as one of the guys was not feeling to well. There were 5 of them , I beleave a cooler will hold from 30 to 40 fish? Have a couple guys out there tonight. The guys in sleeper went home with 20 fish in 2 days, they also made a trip to L.O.W. Did not do to well there 2 saugers. Never talked to Tim so have no idea how they did. Guys in cabin went out at dusk have not came in yet. Have guys coming tomorrow will see how they do .Will be moving sleeper to new area and fishing it hard for the next 7 nights. Caught a bunch of small perch a couple northern and released some nice walleye (if ya catch one with a pink jig in it's mouth please send the jig back to me....it's my fiance's good luck charm) only one crappie. the guys a hundred yards north filled out a bucket of crappie between 4pm and 9pm and another bucket between 2am and 4am. Name: paul Upper_Red_Lakehere is a different question, has anyone ever fished the lower red lake? I can't believe the native community is missing the boat on the crappie fishing you have on url. Maybe they don't have the ### upper does.. or at least how about the chance to fish the rest of the lake...can you comment cookie. thanks for all the updates on url. My friends and I would like to thank you and you can let the Red lake area know we have been doing our part for your economy. From the Minnesota Fishing Regulations-page 54-"No person may erect a dark house, fish house or shelter within 10 feet of an existing dark house, fish house or shelter." That's right folks, the law states 10 feet. Not 100 feet, not 50 feet, not 25 feet. 10 feet is the law. Please respect this law.
