Cookie, promised to let you know how we did Sunday Feb.9th out of Roger's Campground. Well, we didn't. Weather conditions were pretty harsh and that effected the bite. I caught the only crappie out of 4 guys, we pulled up a bunch of perch and I had a big northern break my line. The wind was so bad that someone had to be in the portables at all times otherwise it would blow away. Would like to get up there again sometime soon and give it another shot. I would recommend Roger's as good place to access the lake, very nice people and the lady (can't remember her name) was more then willing to give any advice, too bad she couldn't control the weather. Good luck all!

I did a solo trip last year and couldn't believe the fishing. I am looking to make my buddies believers. Any Tips would be appreciated... I'll be glad to pass on any information when we come back. Ben sorry you had no luck,as you saw red lake is huge, as you no the weather can have a effect on fishing and it has been a couple of rough days. I personley did not go on the lake much the last few days. The wind and cold can play havoc on you if your in portables. It was so cold Sunday night that when Rod folded up his portable the plastic window shattered.Rod was a diehard out there and moved quite a bit even in those conditions. He did manage to find and catch some fish. I was very impressed... and would like to fish with him somtime in the future. Bruce and his bunch were hunkered down and did not have much action. When that portable went by the picture window on Tuesday morning they had seen enough. Rick managed to catch 6 fish tuesday night, can only hope the weather improves and the fish start to bite better. A big key on this lake is to try different spots, if there is no action after dark you need to move, even 20 yards can make a huge difference. If I was fishing portables I would pre drill some extra holes in the area you are fishing and if your not getting any action after dark move or at least try dropping a jig down the extra holes, using a vex. to see if you have any takers ,they seem to come from the bottom out of no where. You don't always mark them unless they come off the bottom after your presentation. Ray,Dennis and Ted were out there last night and will be checking with them later to see how thev'e done. COOKIE

Just returned from the great URL everyone there is friendly. But don't expect to find fish without a lot of pre-planning. We did and got skunked. We fished all the big groups of houses and the basketball hoop and the various rental house locations and checked with many fishermen in those houses. We had a good camera and a good vexlar. We saw one crappie a few northern and caught a few perch and a couple walleye. None of the fishermen were catching anything but one or two. Do your home work and know where you are going to fish before you get there, it is a huge lake and it all looks the same. Don't count on the rentals to be on fish. By the way I saw some awful rental houses so ask what you are getting. We are good fishermen but not good planners. We left and went back to Alex and caught 8 nice crappies in the evening. We had a good time but just a word to the wise--do your home work

Cookie: I laugh at myself some times also!! I like using the wood stove because that is what I was brought up to use as a young boy. I have a propane stove I could use but I like using wood!! I met a young man out on another lake this winter and he had never seen a wood stove used in a fishouse, he was amazed!! Also the jig sticks are what I was brought up with also to use. In fact some of them are ones I have made!! I have a vexilar but I am colored blind and cannot tell if there is a fish down there or not but my son enjoys using it. By the way my portable house is homemade also but it looks great!! I continue to look forward to your daily reports. Hope to see you this weekend!! Harry

Ricko let me no if your up here and we can hook up 15 for 2 double run for 10, jack of knobs for 11 good luck, glad you caught fish they are beauties arn't they. Were out of fish so will have to try and land a few myself. Sounds like Harry might come up with his son. He fishes with the old jig stick, no vex ,and little wood stove like stepping in to the past, when I first went ice fishing. Looks like a gorgeous sunrise wish I was looking out the picture window in the shack but Rick and Darlene are using it. Hope there enjoying the sunrise. Think I'll fire up the sled and zip out there in a bit see if I can get to shack with 2 wheel drive truck. Darlene had never seen a fish come through a ice hole. I've spoiled her in my fish house hope she gets hooked. COOKIE

Here's a few quick tips for them finicky crappies ,try starting your vechicle, somtimes this will intice a bite, watch that bobber if a sled or vechicle passes buy this also can make them take a nip, it will be a quick nip but if your paying attention you might be surprized. If there following your bait but won"t bite take your index finger and pull the line up as slow as possible, when they get to that transition zone, they will take one whack at it, set the hook, you should feel the bite on your finger. GOOD LUCK TO ALL LET ME NO IF THESE TRICKS WORK FOR YOU COOKIE

I agree that walleyes should be rid of on URL because there are not as many lakes in MN that has thousands of crappies and alot over 12 inches and if we do not get rid of walleyes the crappie population will go down then we will probably have to wait for another 5-20 years til the population of crappies rise if we all dont keep any walleyes. so the limit of walleyes should be unlimited then crappies 15 (will be 10 starting spring) then the crappie fishing will be awesome all the times on URL. Where else can you catch your limit or more than your limit and the biggest is 15 inches? anywhere else ... no i dont think so if you did youre just BS us. anyways hope the crappie population will continue well. GOOD FISHING

Cookie thanks for all the fine reports you've been putting on this site. I know all the guys I fish with look at this site daily! We were there up there Feb 7th and 8th and did go home with our limits largest one 14 1/2 and many in the 13 inch size. We were using red and blue glows baits that worked well, also waxies three to a bait and it worked. Lost my butt in cribbage during slow times but hope to get that back this weekend + more of the great fishing the url has. I'll post when i get back so keep up the great reports Cookie they make my day!

I would have to say that upper red is a great fishery with or without walleye, as you can see, lake of the woods classes have been very small lately but give it 3 or 4 years and that will be the lake to be at. I also believe that upper red is so vast and such a small portion is fished there is no way for the large population of crappies to fall to quickly. Over 3/4's of upper red and all over lower red can not be fished by us and if their are fish where we are they are all out there too. You have to remember their is vast water that has yet been explored or harvested for crappies. Let the walleyes come on but give it a couple years and it will have a lot of big trophy walleyes and number. They are allready on the rise and keep coming. Let lake of the woods be walleye. Red can be known for what it is now. The CRAPPIES!!! Good Fishing

They say that the first year is the toughest for the crappies, last year 2001 survey showed the biggest hatch of all time but the next year that was deminished. Again 2002 was good and they will know next year how they do. It would be nice if they could manage for both but I do miss eating thoughs walleyes the best fish in Minnesota. They say the conditions have to be perfect for the crappies to survive ,do the walleys eat most of the small crappies? I don't no, we would have to ask the DNR. COOKIE
