Minnesota Lake Balckduck Lake
From the Minnesota DNR: Blackduck Lake is in Class 27 which is a group of lakes described as very large, deep, hardwater lakes with regular shorelines (few bays). Bemidji area lakes in the class include Big, Clearwater, Big Wolf, Big Turtle, Andrusia, Grace and Kitchi. There are about 100 lakes of this class distributed throughout central Minnesota. The management plan for Blackduck Lake is to stock walleye fry during two of three years (1,375,000/year). For genetic purposes walleye are stocked by watershed boundaries (Red River strain). Walleye were sampled in 1996 at a rate far higher than during any previous survey and higher than most comparable lakes. The average weight of 1.3 pounds is comparable with most Blackduck lake surveys and within the normal range for the lake class. Forty-four percent of the walleye sampled were between 16 and 20 inches with another 34% between 10 and 12 inches. The largest walleye sampled in 1996 was 25.4 inches and weighed 5.4 pounds. Northern pike in 1996 were more abundant than during any other survey since 1978 and near the average for other lakes in the class. The average weight of 2.1 pounds is the highest since 1956 and near the average for other lakes in the class. The largest pike sampled was 35.4 inches and weighed 9.6 pounds. Some northern pike have Neascus (black spot). Yellow perch in Blackduck Lake are more abundant than most comparable lakes but about average when compared with previous surveys. The average size of 6.5 inches and 0.1 pounds is the lowest on record dating back to 1956 though perch up to 13 inches were sampled. The average size is now below the average for comparable lakes. Neascus and yellow grubs were found in some perch. Although these parasites are a nuisance to anglers, they have little effect on the fish and are of no danger for consumption. Lakes in Class 27 do not normally have high populations of crappies, panfish or bass though individual fish are often of good size.
