I was out on Red this weekend. My brother landed a 6 1/2 pound Walleye. I caught about 30 some crappies and 4 Walleye's none being smaller than 2 pounds. We had the most fun I've ever had ice fishing. I would advise everyone to hit the Rocky End Cove from now until about the First week in February. We would have caught more but we ran out of fatheads and shiners.

Please Please bring your own garbage bag and pick up your own trash. It's sad that there are so much garbage left by morans who just don't get it.

Went up to Red Lake last night out from Benz-o-matic. My brother and I caught a few really nice walleye, a nice northern and some perch. I caught two crappie. We were there from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m..

Still pretty slow right now so all you cheeseheads and city folk making plans to come up here and fish red lake might want to wait until the crappie move into the upper part of upper red. Otherwise you may be dissapointed. Keep the ice clean!

Was out on Red, Bemidji, and Winnie this weekend 12-28. Nothing to report for fish. Caught one nice 3lb walleye on Red Sat nite. No one was catching them near Mort's or Benz-O-Matic. Probably still too early.

Need some assistance. I am considering stoping by red lake on my way to Devil's Lake ND for some of those crappies I have heard about. I would appreciate it if someone would let me where I could stay, (cabin on Ice, or hotel) Also if the bite is on and maybe some gps cordinates to get me started. Also is there a good night bite?

Thanks, Jon Borreson

Fished 3.3, 5.1 & 6.1 miles out of Washkish on 12/26/02 finder showed one significant fish per hour. I could see my sinker, minnow and occassional perch. Caught one 1.5 lb walleye. Fished 5.2 miles out of Hudecs on 12/28/02 - caught two small perch in two hours. Saw both of them coming on the depth finder. It appears the crappies had not arrived at the Northeast corner of Upper Red Lake yet.

The crappie fishing usually keeps getting better as the season moves along. It is my feeling that the crappies move to the deeper, cooler water across the Reservation line during the summer heat and then filter back to this shallower side of the lake during the winter to prepare for spawning in the spring. The ice is in good shape. Fullsized trucks are going out.

Fishing will pick up after the new year. Will be slow around christmas. The ice depth around Brainerd is ranging from 9-14 inches. For the most part it is fairly good ice. People have been driving full size vehicles out as of this weekend on lakes that have been known to have underwater springs. With this information I would say that chances are good that you can drive out on Red.

Red Baron: I've never used the aqua view and do not think it will offer much for in the way of catching fish. Vexilar is the only way to go for sure. Good luck! I have not gone up to Red as yet because the bite is still slow but I may try this weekend.

TOM,

THANKS FOR YOU INPUT. I TRIED MOSTLY EVERYTHING THAT YOU SAID, I JUST THINK THAT WE HIT IT ON THE WRONG TIME OF YEAR. WHEN WE WOULD GET HOME, OTHER PEOPLE WOULD TELL US THAT THEY WERE HAMMERING THEM. HAVE YOU EVER USED A AQUA-VIEW ON RED. WHAT IS YOU FEELING TOWARDS USING ONE OF THEM. I LIKE THE VEXILAR 100 TIMES BETTER. THANKS FOR RESPONDING. -THE RED BARON

Red Baron: Also a good idea is to split up your party. Set your portables up in different spots on the lake. that way if one area is hot, you can pull up and set up on the hot spot. Good luck!

Red Baron: Right now the bite is slow. Water is still somewhat cloudy yet. Should clear up soon though. Keep posting and I will try and keep you posted.

What you need to do is get your holes drilled and lines down around 4:00. If you do not catch crappie by say 6:00, then move to another spot. A crappie school can be a mere 10 yards away from your hole, or it can be 100 yards. the bite should start around 5-6. If you have not caught anything, then, move. I've been skunked, moved and then nailed them so it does work. Also try puting down different lures with different baits. Crappie minnows and wax worms work best of course and any glow jig is a plus!

<snipped by webmaster>We have commercial solutions available on the front page for resorts</snipped>

Good luck and keep the ice clean!

Hey Tom,

How did you guys do up there last year. I was up there twice when they were supposedly biting. No such luck. We caught maybe 15 in two days. I'm not sure where they were hiding because we couldn't even find them on the vexlar. We tried fishing in the groups of people, and outside the groups of people. Any good advice? I am deffinitly going again this year. We stayed in Bemidji last year and drove up there each day. Kinda disapointing after driving that distance for only 15. Write back please. Thanks -The Red Baron
